I would be really confused. But if this God was still love and goodness itself, then I would still be happy.
Certainly not a god that would slaughter people for not worshiping him (Exodus 22:19), killing nonbelievers (2 Chronicles 15:12-13), kill an entire town if one person worships another god (Deuteronomy 13:13-19), killing women if they are not virgins on their wedding night (Deuteronomy 22:20-21), infidels and homosexuals must die (Romans 1:24-32) condoning and making rules for slavery, including how to sell your daughter into sex slavery (Leviticus 25:44-46, Exodus 21:7-11, Ephesians 6:5).
I hope that's not the god you are describing as "love and goodness itself" 
You'd believe if you just opened your heart" is a terrible argument for religion. It's basically saying, "If you bias yourself enough, you can convince yourself that this is true." If religion were true, people wouldn't need faith to believe it -- it would be supported by good evidence.

If only a concept of free will that were more than just a labeling of not having free will as "free will" were even logically coherent. All that can be done with free will is label something that's indistinguishable from its non-existence as "free will".... kind of like God really.
If we didn't call doing something "of one's own free will", "free will", would there be any difference? Nope. Saying someone did something "on purpose" (whether their intentional action was done of their own free will or not!) would suffice.
I was just talking hypothetically... just talking about a god that if it created life, didn't ask anything in return from that life.

If there was a God it would be rather sad if all the shit his, her or its believers said about it was exaggerated bullshit but a good God did actually exist, and they just couldn't stop the bad shit in the world that their believers claimed they could.

I think I could be a generally content neo-platonist following Plotinus. Im not all that hung up on NT reliability etc but slowly I'm finding its historicity more and more plausible. Reading a lot of Robert Price lately. Very amusing and witty fellow and he makes some interesting points but not yet enough to turn me the other way.

Not unless I were an old testament literalist. We look to Jesus when trying to imagine how God is like. His examples, His teachings... dying for us, etc.

There is no version of any god anywhere that is acceptable given the state of the world as it is. If a god is too impotent or uncaring to rescue people from intolerable torment or correct adherents about its desires for us, that is an unworthy god no matter what other characteristics they possess. Of course as a rational skeptic I'd still question whether the answer is correct if it's not demonstrated in a way that is scientific but yes, I'd want to know for certain if only to get all the theists in the world to finally shut the fuck up about their stupid bullshit and not be able to get away with all their crap in the name of their phony-baloney gods once they are slapped in the face with the reality that no matter how diverse their beliefs are, they were still dead fucking wrong.
Religions were invented to impress and dupe illiterate, superstitious stone-age peasants. So in this modern, enlightened age of information, what's your excuse? Or are you saying with all your advantages, you were still tricked as easily as those early humans?

If there ever was such a thing, I'm going to have to go with the all powerful (nice or asshole, doesn't matter).
It doesn't matter because the sun is doomed, the earth is doomed, the whole universe is doomed. That is a mathematical certainty.
The only thing to stop or reverse or start the process again is an all powerful being. Just thinking about humanities prospects for eternal survival as a species..
