It actually led to a major schism.

A schism ?

How can a religion with tons and tons of evidence be subject to different interpretations that would lead to a schism ??

ESPECIALLY about some major tenet of the faith ??
My comment about Mary not existing until about 1100 A.D. or so has to do with the name = Mary = and not necessarily with the character.  It's important to remember that the Bible is an English creation so the writers kept changing the names of the main characters  to reflect their biases.  But a couple of Dutch conmen came up with the name of Jesus, which didn't exist before 1630.

The important thing about names is that they influence how and what you think about the characters.  Even if you didn't know anything about biblical stories wouldn't you think that Mary would be a more appropriate name for "Jesus'" mommy than Jezebel?

The bible, as a pointless pile of dogshit, existed long before English was even a language.  That it was subsequently written into English does not obviate the fact that it existed in Latin and Greek from the 4th century onward.  And yes, the letter J was a medieval invention but no one had any trouble calling the fucker Iesou prior to that.

The Bible didn't exist as a comprehensive book until a committee of story tellers, writers, and artists in England published three master copies written in Latin in 692 A.D.  That's not to say that were no manuscripts of assorted individual religious stories floating around but they were not the Bible.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Codex_Vaticanus

Quote:The Codex Vaticanus (The Vatican, Bibl. Vat., Vat. gr. 1209; no. B or 03 Gregory-Aland, δ 1 von Soden) is one of the oldest extant manuscripts of the Greek Bible (Old and New Testament), one of the four great uncial codices.[1] The Codex is named after its place of conservation in the Vatican Library, where it has been kept since at least the 15th century.[2] It is written on 759 leaves of vellum in uncial letters and has been dated palaeographically to the 4th century.

Of course, what is most interesting are the missing parts in the "unchanging" word of god that didn't make it into Vaticanus but were added later.  That always blows the jesus freaks' minds.

In any case, comparing him to individuals like Caesar (which one?) and Alexander the Great is a pretty thorough demonstration of the fact that you don't understand historicity very well.

You also missed the part where those same scholars consider your gospels to be narratives with little to no truth to them.

You don't get it Pinky, do you?  Banghead

Can't you see that every single time that atheists come up with a new story I destroy it.
These stories are like bubbles of air.
Is so easy to destroy them that you have no idea.
All I do is blow them and they burst.  Logic

Now that I destroyed your bubble that say that there is no historicity in Jesus story you come up with more stories.

For God's sake Pinky give a brake to your mind and come to the conclusion that there is no future in atheism.
None of whatsoever mate. Truce
It is a complete downfall into nothingness.  Panic

The story hasn't changed, dude. Jesus of Nazareth has practically no historicity, and even mainstream scholarship concedes that the stories about him are either mostly or entirely bullshit. Either way, the character we see in the Bible is fictional, and your knockoff gospel Jesus is also fictional.
Verbatim from the mouth of Jesus (retranslated from a retranslation of a copy of a copy):

"Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you too will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. How can you see your brother's head up his ass when your own vision is darkened by your head being even further up your ass? How can you say to your brother, 'Get your head out of your ass,' when all the time your head is up your own ass? You hypocrite! First take your head out of your own ass, and then you will see clearly who has his head up his ass and who doesn't." Matthew 7:1-5 (also Luke 6: 41-42)

Now then trivial Rik. Do you see a pattern here? Every one of these 'bible scholars' is a priest/theologian. You know; people who's livelihoods depend on this idiotic story being true. And not a history degree between them, masters of divinity (Whatever the fuck that is) plenty, a masters in history, none. Not fucking one! Now here's a challenge for you. find me a comparative list of bible scholars that are>

a) Not priests.
b) Not theologians.
c) Has a degree in history.

*For every one you can name I will present another list of wankers as long as this one. And these are only the REMFs, I haven't listed any of the big guns yet.

Good luck.

Amusing.  In that list is Bauckham who was trashed by Kurt Noll in a post I made just this morning about his "testimony" bullshit.

https://atheistforums.org/thread-51117-p...pid1619129

And Rudolf Bultmann in the list?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rudolf_Bultmann

Quote:Bultmann is known for his belief that the historical analysis of the New Testament is both futile and unnecessary, given that the earliest Christian literature showed little interest in specific locations.

Bultmann relied on demythologization, an approach interpreting the mythological elements in the New Testament existentially. Bultmann contended that only faith in the kerygma, or proclamation, of the New Testament was necessary for Christian faith, not any particular facts regarding the historical Jesus.[

I humbly accept the rebuke. And yes, I did read the Wiki entry on Bultmann, I read all of them. At first I intended to add a side note the names of those who's opinions differed from mainstream 'bible scholars' but it would take too long. As it is, I spent five hours on that list, also it would ruin the single line format. There is another guy in that list (not Bauckham) who also bucked the trend, I can't remember just now.
But even so, my main point still stands, the overwhelming vast majority of 'bible scholars' are not trained in historical research.

And yes I read that post in the other thread, I think that's what gave me the idea. That and little Rik's ravings.

You surely must have a fixation with the Bible.  Banging Head On Desk

Did I ever mention the Bible in defense for Jesus story?

Just read the link that I posted in my previous post about the non-Christian sources that tell us about the historicity of Jesus.
