RE: Hurricane Irma
Irma's a Cat 1 storm right now, but has a broad tropical-storm wake, over 400 miles in radius: http://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2...e-mainland

And let's not forget these folk:

Quote:Smack in the center of that path were the U.S. Virgin Islands, a territory torn apart with the storm's arrival Wednesday. Now, days later, many on the islands fear the focus of their fellow Americans will be irreversibly drawn to the mainland, while they're left to pick up the pieces.

The Associated Press reports that of the at least 24 people who were killed by Irma in the Caribbean, at least four people died in the U.S. territory.

[...]

The other two major islands in the U.S. territory, St. John and St. Thomas, are still "not safe," Smith wrote in an email Sunday.

"No power, no running water, no cell service. The only hospital on St John faced catastrophic failure during the storm. Patients with life threatening injuries were evacuated to hospitals in Puerto Rico and St. Croix."

Smith reports obstacles to obtaining assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, including the fact that the stations distributing food or water in rations are difficult to find without power or cell service.

Good morning Georgia. How's the weather?

Not in GA, but here in Central FL, we're all good. Curfew stands until 6PM, but I talked to my landlord, and all is good at the trailer park, so I can go home later. Not sure if there will be work tomorrow, but I don't imagine we'll be closed for much longer.

I survived my first hurricane, y'all!

The hard right will blame Obama for any damage.

I was watching The Weather Channel's live coverage (which was like watching re-runs of the same Scooby Duo episode, but boy, some meteorologists really get into things, like they are Howard Cosell calling a boxing match!) and across the bottom of the screen was scrolling text, "President Trump calls Irma a monster...", along with other FEMA-type announcements.  Just hilarious!!

My favorite moment of Irma coverage "hilarity" came courtesy of CNN, prior to the storm making landfall. They were showing live coverage of a FEMA briefing. To the left of the man speaking was the guy signing for the hearing impaired. All good, right? Well, no. The spot producer, in his or her infinite wisdom, placed the inset of the satellite image of Irma directly over the signer's hands, so unless a hearing-impaired viewer was reading the speaker's lips, they would have no earthly idea what the government was advising them to do.

Any country where the answer to the question "What animals there aren't deadly to humans?" is "some varieties of sheep, and we're not too sure 'bout them", should be avoided like the plague.

On the other hand, Beccs.
