I like a thick, somewhat solid pillow to rest my head on. Not really hard, but it has to be supportive. Two if it's just thin pillows. Sometimes I've put a pillow between my legs, but I can do with or without that.

I didn't ship my knee pillow, because we were limited on how much we could send, and my husband assured me we could by stuff once we got here. Insert giant eye roll because going on 3 months now, and I'm still sleeping with a decorative fish pillow between my knees that gives my ankles 0 support(and has glass eyes I need to avoid when using it). My left ankle is sore most days as I limp around the uneven cobbles here. Ha. I really need to get a propper second pillow soon. Maybe Ikea will have something more suitable.
Interesting topic Whatevs. Its amazing to think how people sleept for hundreds and thousands of years on straw, or at best, thin wool padding. Pillows werent even a thing for most humans! Sounds miserable.
That is so not my experience in Germany...

ohh..... In Spain, it is common (and it is in line with my experience there) to have what in Portuguese is called a "travesseiro", a pillow that spans the whole bed, from one side to the other. Whoever is in bed shares it.

Two, usually at the headboard, sometimes one to wrap my arm around (I'm a side sleeper).
One almost always ends up on the floor or jammed between the headboard and the mattress. Sometimes both.

6 ANCIENT feather pillows. I'm sure they are all older than me. Grew up with 2 of them, have moved them everywhere I've lived, I travel with 2 ALWAYS, can't imagine sleeping on anything else. One or 2 for my head, rest of them scattered around the bed.
I do have a foam pillow stuck between bed and wall (along with some comforters and extra blankets to be handy if needed) but I'd be damned if I ever put my head on it.
Never tried a memory foam one, I suspect I'd hate it.
When I was hospitalized a couple of times during grade school had to have my pillows brought down !!! These days I suppose the hospital staff would come unhinged if I tried to bring them with me.
One business trip I went on I didn't take a pillow or two, IT WAS A FUCKING NIGHTMARE !!! NEVER AGAIN !!!!
Did buy a couple of new feather pillows at Younkers back in the 90s, they were awful. The ratio of down to quills was wrong, the casing was way too thin and I took them back. They weren't surprised, the return desk lady said most of them they sold had come back and they had pulled the item from the shelves.
LOL, if I am spending the night with someone, for some reason I don't care. Might be cuz I'm a snuggler . . . .

I had one of those in the hostel when I was over. The first time I've managed to sleep with only one pillow in absolute yonks. Usually when in a hostel, I have to prop my head up using loads of clothes under the single pillow given.

When my girlfriend is at my place I just use one, usually under my head/shoulder as I spoon her.
When she's not there I have two, one for my head and the other to put under my arm (I'm a side sleeper). I usually just use some of my gigantic comforter to put some space between my legs so I'm not crushing my junk.

I have two for my head, not always using both, just as the mood strikes. I have two others which occasionally get used for side support.
