Consecrated virgins need not be virgins, says Vatican 

Consecrated virgins say they are "disappointed" by the Vatican’s new guidance that literal virginity is not necessary. 
A document released earlier this month says that a woman does not need to have "kept her body in perfect continence" to become a consecrated virgin. 
The Vatican document, entitled Ecclesiae Sponsae Imago, says that the "call to give witness to the Church’s virginal, spousal and fruitful love for Christ is not reducible to the symbol of physical integrity.

Recruiting must be getting more and more difficult.

Indian lawmaker says Mother Teresa should be stripped of civilian honor over baby-trafficking scandal

It’s been nearly 40 years since Mother Teresa was conferred India‘s highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna (Jewel of India), but there are growing calls for the accolade to be rescinded.

Last week, Indian authorities said they busted a baby-trafficking racket in a shelter run by the Missionaries of Charity, the religious order set up by the late Albanian-Indian missionary in 1950.

Child welfare authorities said a nun and one other person linked to the charity were selling babies to childless couples for between $550 and $1,450.

Swamy said his stance wasn’t merely influenced by the baby-trafficking scandal, saying he saw it as the last straw in a long line of criticisms levelled at Mother Teresa over many years.

He cited her loyalty to the late American financier Charles Keating, who was convicted of swindling millions of dollars from small investors in the 1980s — Teresa’s charity benefited greatly from Keating’s donations, and she even wrote to a California Superior Court judge seeking clemency for Keating on account of his being “kind and generous to God’s poor,” according to a letter published by Christopher Hitchens in his book, “The Missionary Position.”

Pope accepts Theodore McCarrick’s resignation as cardinal following sex abuse scandal

“Pope Francis accepted his resignation from the cardinalate and has ordered his suspension from the exercise of any public ministry, together with the obligation to remain in a house yet to be indicated to him, for a life of prayer and penance until the accusations made against him are examined in a regular canonical trial,” a statement said.

Catholic Church Faces Reckoning in Chile as Sex Abuse Scandal Widens

Special prosecutors, who have been appointed in each of Chile’s 15 regions, are examining cases involving 104 potential victims, half of whom were underage when the reported offenses took place. Nearly 70 clergy and lay people are under investigation, including three bishops.

Cardinal Ezzati, who has denied accusations of covering up abuse, is the highest-ranking church official in Chile under investigation. Next week a congressional commission may consider revoking the Italian-born cardinal’s Chilean citizenship, which was awarded in 2006.
