RE: Damned Catholics
Catholic women urged to strike over ‘betrayal’ on ordination

Pope Francis and cardinals accused of ignoring calls to give women greater leadership roles.

Catholic Women Strike: Global Witness for Equality was launched this month and is calling on women who are regular churchgoers, who work for the church on a voluntary basis or who have paid jobs with Catholic organisations to withhold their labour through Lent next year (5 March to 20 April). “We believe the time is ripe to demand what is right … Instead of waiting for a papal ‘yes’, we issue forth our ‘no’ to the systems of misogyny, sexism and patriarchy,” says the campaign’s website.

Pope Francis has twice, in 2016 and 2020, commissioned reports to study the history of women deacons. The findings were not publicised, but it is widely acknowledged that women have performed this role. Many believe that, once women are ordained as deacons, it will only be a question of time before they are also ordained as priests.

The issue is urgent because fewer men, in Europe especially, are coming forward for ordination.

For the first time in its history, the Women’s Ordination Conference was mentioned by name on the Vatican website. McElwee said: “That seemed to signal change, and that there was room for more.” But over time, hopes of reform have been dashed by a pope and cardinals who turned out to be unwilling to make it central, she said. “It’s felt like a betrayal … it has been heartbreaking. The final document [of the Synod] was disappointing and insufficient and deeply theological, which may not resonate with people in the parishes. It felt hollow. It has all been extremely frustrating … we want to make visible the huge contribution women make to the church,” she said. “If enough women join us, this will make an enormous difference – and we’re working with many organisations across the world.”

teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

Bergoglio gets a new Popemobile and it's electric

Pope Francis is going all-electric with his papamobile. Shortly before his 88th birthday, the head of 1.4 billion Catholics took delivery of a new vehicle in the Vatican: a custom-built Mercedes-Benz that for the first time drives completely without harmful CO2 emissions.

The all-electric model is a further development of the G580 electric off-road vehicle. With its custom-made gearbox, it can also travel at walking pace over longer distances. The Pope sits practically at the back of the loading area: on a raised chair that can be rotated. This allows him to point and wave in all directions. There is an attachment for bad weather.

Which he will immediately sell and give all the money to the poor, saying, "Jesus didn't need shoes so I don't need a car, and neither do I need to be narcissistically displayed in an expensive car like a clown."

Seems to be the current trend in car design.

At least it’s less ostentatious than what Popes used to be carted about in:

Maybe the new Popemobile could use some of that kitsch because now it looks rather geriatric. It looks like a urinal on wheels.

Anyway, altar boys strike back.

Vatican 'on the verge of bankruptcy' as world's smallest country struggles to pay pensions

The Vatican is on the brink of bankruptcy and may not be able to meet its pension obligations after a collapse in revenues.

The latest financial statements showed the Vatican- the world's smallest country - ran an operating deficit of 83 million euros (£69m) in 2023, five million more than in 2022.

One key reason for the deficit is a collapse in donations from Catholic Churches around the world, as well as from the public.

Donations are one of three major sources of income for the Vatican, along with monies received from real asset assets and museum entry fees.

Many Catholics have stopped their donations after growing disillusioned with the reforms of Pope Francis.

At the same time, visitor numbers to the city-state have still not recovered to their pre-Covid levels.

The Vatican hopes to boost its coffers from an expected increase in tourists to Rome next year.

The city is preparing to celebrate the Great Jubilee, which commemorates the union between Christianity and the Roman Empire at the Council of Nicaea 1,700 years ago.

The Jubilee is expected to attract over 35 million pilgrims, eager for indulgence from their sins.

Quote:Church pushes back against attempts to legalize abortion in Nigeria

The Nigerian Health Ministers, Dr. Mukhtar Yawale Muhammad and Dr. Osagie Ehanire, have been pushing for the revision of the Penal Code to expand access to abortion rights, and they found a working partnership with abortion-promoting NGOs like the International Planned Parenthood Federation, IPPF and Ipas.

The government has argued that the intention is to safeguard the lives of girls and women, where over 20 percent to 30 percent of maternal deaths result from unsafe abortion. Dr. Lucky Palmer, the Country Director of Ipas Nigeria Health Foundation, said that unplanned pregnancies contribute to over 1,500 maternal deaths annually in Nigeria.

Catholic activists under their umbrella organization, CitizenGO Africa, have pushed back against relaxing abortion laws, citing the freedom of even unborn babes to life.

“This move [to legalize abortion] threatens the lives of millions of unborn children and undermines the laws and the moral foundation of our nation,” the activists say in their December 2 protest.

Catholic leaders in Nigeria have added their voices to the protests, telling Crux that abortion fundamentally violates God’s gift to life.

Josef Ishu, secretary of the Nigerian bishops’ conference Laity Office said that the Catholic Church’s stance on abortion is that nobody has the right to take or terminate another person’s life.

“This is one of the fundamental principles of the Catholic Social Teaching, respect to human life from conception to natural death, from womb to tomb. This is so because life is sacred, and we all are created in the image and likeness of God, therefore, only God can take life when He so wish,” he told Crux.
