In reading this, I had a funny feeling. If each realization of quantum potential sets what is possible after it, then. . . what was the FIRST realization of any quantum potential.

I don't get it.
You have a list of possibilities and things that actually happen can change that list for the future. Isn't that how it's always been? 
I'm still struggling to understand what the actual content of their proposal is beyond a re-labelling of the things that appear in the standard many worlds interpretation - might have to read the original paper sometime.

Isn't this just where the mathematics leads them rather than a claim about reality?

It seems to me, from my pea-brain's limited understanding of what I read, that they are going an extra step by suggesting that this theoretical list of possibilities is an aspect of our reality that is as "real" as we understand space-time/existence to be real. Real, but not actually existing? That one gives me diabetes! ?
