Is anything sacred? (Extra credit for specifying what it is for you.)
November 14, 2017 at 5:08 pm (This post was last modified: November 14, 2017 at 5:43 pm by Whateverist.)
I'm wondering how common it is for atheists to feel that some things are sacred. Obviously I don't mean in the primary ways the word is used. When I googled it, it would be third usage mentioned "regarded with great respect and reverence by a particular religion, group, or individual." So I'm wondering if, for those who identify as atheists, there is anything you as an atheist regard with great respect and reverence, either as an individual or a member of a group you identify with. For the theists, do you experience anything of the sort we might site as sacred to you as well, or do you reserve that for God/religion?
Oh what the hell, I'll make a poll for this.
Sacred defined.
sa·cred ˈsākrəd/ adjective adjective: sacred
connected with God (or the gods) or dedicated to a religious purpose and so deserving veneration. "sacred rites" synonyms: holy, hallowed, blessed, consecrated, sanctified, venerated, revered; archaicblest
"the priest entered the sacred place"
religious rather than secular. "sacred music" synonyms: religious, spiritual, devotional, church, ecclesiastical
"sacred music" antonyms: secular, profane
(of writing or text) embodying the laws or doctrines of a religion. "a sacred Hindu text"
regarded with great respect and reverence by a particular religion, group, or individual. "an animal sacred to Mexican culture"
sacrosanct. "to a police officer nothing is sacred" synonyms: sacrosanct, inviolable, inviolate, invulnerable, untouchable, protected, defended, secure
"the hill is sacred to the tribe"
Oh what the hell, I'll make a poll for this. I mean, everyone loves a poll, right?
The question: is anything sacred to you?
The options will be:
1) I'm a nonbeliever and of course nothing is sacred to me.
2) I'm a nonbeliever and of course some things are sacred to me.
3) I'm a nonbeliever and I have an issue with the question.
4) I'm a believer and only God is really sacred for me.
5) I'm a believer and many things are sacred for me, God included naturally.
6) I'm a believer and I have an issue with the question.

"Of course, everyone will claim they respect someone who tries to speak the truth, but in reality, this is a rare quality. Most respect those who speak truths they agree with, and their respect for the speaking only extends as far as their realm of personal agreement. It is less common, almost to the point of becoming a saintly virtue, that someone truly respects and loves the truth seeker, even when their conclusions differ wildly."

I sort of have a vague feeling that something is sacred but I can't think what just now. I'll get back to you on it but I sort of suspect that you might doubt my sincerity when I do.

Any chance you guys would like to move to the other thread by this name that actually includes the poll?

OK no worries, definitely won't respond to it at all. Last thing you need is content to be added to a thread that you accidentally created and wish were gone.

OK as I said on the other thread, I sort of have a vague feeling that something is sacred but I can't think what just now. I'll get back to you on it but I sort of suspect that you might doubt my sincerity when I do.
I keep thinking of Kashmir by Led Zeppelin but I don't know why. Maybe because a snarky bandmate once called it boring when I was pretentious.
