Alabama is very Right-wing and the American Right has made abundantly clear that they value saying the right things about the right issues far more than actually being a decent human being. Right wingers call this “virtue signaling” and decry it among the left, but somehow don’t care that such a thing has become the entire goddam moral outlook of their own side. This subtext has been around for decades, if not centuries, but since Trump became the frontrunner and many conservative ideologues decided to endorse the same candidate as David Duke and for the exact same reasons, it’s pretty much party law at this point.
