Here's what I think of off the top of my head:

* Be fair
* Be honest
* Be sure to think before you act
* Harm no one who hasn't hurt you.

And, really, I think Rabbi Hillel the Elder (just barely a contemporary of Jesus; he may have been alive for the discussion in the temple) said it best: when asked if he could give a summary of Judaism while standing on one leg, he said: "That which is hateful to you, do not do to your neighbor. That is the whole Torah; the rest is commentary. Go and study it." (Babylonian Talmud, tractate Shabbat 31a)

It seems silly and obvious, but it's crazy how much people do because they think that's what they're supposed to do.  The vague notion of the 'right way to live.'  It's why I think people are generally so miserable.  We're told to live our lives in a way we don't enjoy for reasons that aren't particularly clear.  People dutifully play along, and then everybody is sad, and nobody can figure out why.

1) Resist dogma of all sorts; that which cannot be questioned should be treated with the most severe skepticism.
2) Practice empathy in all things; remember that the vast majority of the time, it's not about me.
3) Never be afraid to try new things; remember the lessons from the past when you stretched what you thought was possible.
4) Take joy in the people in your life and the things you have; don't get bogged down in things desired.
5) Allow people to tell their stories; learn from them and we'll both grow.

Don't you think sacrifice and delaying immediate gratification can sometimes pay off and make you happier in the long run though?

Sure.  There are conflicting impulses.  I don't want to exercise.  But I also REALLY don't want to get fat, have heart problems, and die in my 50's.  I guess the way I presented it implied a lack of thoughtfulness.  There'll be plenty of times short and long term goals are at odds.  What's important to me, is that when deciding what I do is based on what I actually want and not 'other' stuff.
