That is sad. I guess I just didn't grow up around stuff like this.
It's everywhere in America. You may not have noticed it, but you damned well grew up around it.

I'd report him to his supervisor. I mean fuck, what if you happened to be black? Would he have refused to escort you around, because he doesn't want to serve a black person?
"Tradition" is just a word people use to make themselves feel better about being an asshole.

Part way through the day we stopped for a coffee at a major caffeine shop, while we were queueing, my guide said "let's move to the other queue, I don't want to be served by a black person" What should I have done? If I made a fuss, it would make my job very difficult as I needed him to take me around, if I kept quiet I would seem to be sharing his views.
In the end I chickened out and kept quiet but still feel bad about it
Were YOU being tested ?
If so, you failed.
I think you have a valid point here. The story did not make sense to me.... a black PERSON is not a typical racist term. Also someone who has that kind of prejudice would have scanned the queue before getting in line - not letting a stranger know they have a racial bias because of the potential job impact. So yes I have to agree, it seems to have been a test.

That would really piss me off if this was just a test. Is that even legal?

My wifes uncle and Auntie visited a while ago and ranted almost the whole time about foriegners, mainly Romanians and Pakistanis then they mentioned one incident and complained that one of "those people" complained that she was a racist! It seems they like to be racist but not called on it.

Similar thing here with relatives. We don't live in an ideal world where people who espouse overtly racist attitudes don't exist anymore.

I would guess, yes it would be legal. But it doesn't mean it was an employer sanctioned test. Nobody likes to work with snitches. Troublemakers.

Why is anyone a racist?
