Discussion of the Deism vs. Theism debate.

RE: Discussion of the Deism vs. Theism debate.
Quote:Given the size and age of the universe, it seems reasonable to assume that the very scale prevents God from relating to us any more than the human scientist can relate to the individual bacteria cell in the colony he created in the petri dish.

Did this remind anyone else of "The Genesis Tub" in The Simpson's Treehouse of Horror VII episode?

Located here for anyone with an overabundance of free time. Tongue The segment I was referring to begins at approximately seven minutes in.
"Faith is about taking a comforting, childlike view of a disturbing and complicated world." ~ Edward Current

A strong opening statement, DP. Your argument, I think, can be won through the problem of evil, your point five. Other points, like those you've raised, are good, but this one, I think, is pretty much irrefutable without resorting to, 'We cannot know God's purposes' (which isn't really an answer). I'd like to see what A Theist makes of it, but I've yet to see a decent response to this problem.
'We must respect the other fellow's religion, but only in the sense and to the extent that we respect his theory that his wife is beautiful and his children smart.' H.L. Mencken

'False religion' is the ultimate tautology.

'It is just like man's vanity and impertinence to call an animal dumb because it is dumb to his dull perceptions.' Mark Twain

'I care not much for a man's religion whose dog and cat are not the better for it.' Abraham Lincoln

DeistPaladin(on debate thread) Wrote:2. If God spoke to prophets, why are the stories almost invariably when the prophets were alone (in the forest, in a cave, on a mountain top, etc)? Why not speak to an entire crowd at once? In fairness, there is a passage in the Bible where Yahweh gives a speech to the entire nation of Judea (Judges 1) but why not today given modern technology?

God would be on youtube. imagine that and all over the news. everyone would be giving different spins on what he had to say.

personally I think the scientist and the bacteria is a good one even thought that wasn't specifically in DP's list.

It'd be like a debate between Snap, Krackle & Pop or Keebler Elves; Which bake the better goodies?

Utterly pointless.

Obviously, because the Keebler Elves would blindfold and behead Snap, Krackle and Pop.

There is no goods but Keebler, and the Elves are their bakers.

Good start DP. The hiddenness of god is my favorite argument, at gets right to the point of my atheism.

Debate? What debate?

An agnostic atheist,I assert only " I do not believe in god(s) due to lack of evidence". Not a complex idea.. I make no claims,so have no burden of proof. There is literally nothing for me to debate.

You believe? Fine; show me your evidence or stop wasting my time and fuck off. Same goes for the atheist who asserts "I believe there is no god" or "there is no god" .Exactly like theism, hard atheism is based on faith, not evidence, and is no more credible than theism.

I think you misunderstand the purpose of this thread, pad. This thread is for discussing the ongoing (currently on hold) debate between a theist and a deist and has nothing to do with those of us that do not believe either position. Hope that clears it up for you.

As for the rest of your post (which was obviously directed at me), you also misunderstand my position, but we could discuss it in a separate thread at some point if you wish. It doesn't matter to me, as I'm not trying to convince anyone of anything.

Have we lost A Theist? Would any other theist like to take his place?
