We are trying to get more vets to heat-treat the serum before antigen testing. You know to ask, so you're way ahead of most people. Heat that serum! (and we're also trying to get people to quit practicing the "slow kill" method, but that's a different story).

Ivermectin ( Heartguard, etc) works fine as a preventative by killing any of the larvae that it finds but it is best used on a monthly basis so gaps do not occur in the regimen which might allow larvae to hatch.  Again in places where mosquitos are ubiquitous it is a must for any responsible dog owner.  But I've never heard any vet suggest not using Immiticide to kill any adult worms already present.  The ones that are there will continue to grow and sooner or later there will be problems.
Ivermectin also has the added benefit of killing various intestinal parasites a dog may pick up like roundworms and hookworms.  Again, in humid areas where mosquitos are common, so are those parasites. 

The biggest problem with Immiticide is the need to keep the dog quiet for two months after completion of the injections so that the dead worms do not break off and head for the lungs where they can cause a pulmonary embolism and therefore a dead dog.  It is not even a particularly expensive treatment but a lot of people don't want to deal with the idea of having to keep a dog quiet for that long.  What can I say.  Some people are idiots.

Ivermectin and its ilk kills the microfilariae and the larvae. Melarsomine (Immiticide) kills adult worms, and to date, is the only drug available to do so. These are two completely different drugs with different purposes. There are several reasons the slow kill method is not recommended by the American Heartworm Society, least of which is, if you are waiting for the worms to die of old age, (which is basically what you are doing), they can do significant damage to the pulmonary vessels of your dog. I won't bore you with those details but here's a link.

And I swear I am not being argumentative, just nerdy: Ivermectin in heartworm preventative doses will not control intestinal parasites. Only heartworm preventative combined with another drug (usually pyrantel) will do that.

You are correct. Interceptor has a high dose of milbemycin (0.23 mg/lb) which does kill intestinal parasites. Heartgard contains a very low dose of ivermectin (0.00272 mg/lb), which is enough to prevent heartworm but is not enough to kill worms, so it is combined with pyrantel.

A very lol-worthy choice of name.  Glad to hear she does so well on three legs.  Is she alpha because she was on the scene before Zero, or is it just her nature?

Fender is quite a bit older than Zero and she has been there much longer so she gets to be alpha. Not to mention Zero doesn't give a fuck about being alpha and he only gets upset when she cuddles me and won't let him on the couch.

Funny the games dogs play, dominance seems to be a central theme in much of it.  But I remember going to a conference on play up at Cal with the wife.  They said the essence of all same-species mammalian play is trusting the other enough to make yourself vulnerable and showing yourself to be trustworthy in return.  

When I first brought Heidi home she was just over a year old.  Fletcher was several years older and Heidi treated him with deference.  But she was always physically more imposing and eventually she took over the top spot.  He could always win the frisbee tug of war contests ..



.. but she could always out wrestle him.  



Once bluff stopped being effective for him ..

So I guess she was top dog.  But being dominant isn't as smooth and easy for her as it was for him so she probably preferred being his first lieutenant most of the time.

So I guess she was top dog.  But being dominant isn't as smooth and easy for her as it was for him so she probably preferred being his first lieutenant most of the time.

Lol my mother in law says the same thing. She literally filled her empty nest once the children moved out of the house. They are her new children and we joke that the ranking is grandkids, chickens, kids. She makes them oatmeal so they have something warm if it's cold outside. Also (and this part I think is HIGHLY messed up on her part) she feeds them leftovers even if the meal consisted of chicken. She shrugs and says they seem to enjoy it.

I promised the woman I adopted the chickens from that I wouldn't feed them chicken. So far I have kept the promise. But sometimes we have way too many eggs, and I cook them eggs. There's something very meta about that.

Chickens will peck the corn out of cow shit. That's why one reason one has to cook the hell out of chicken for safe eating. That and the whole deal with the cloaca.
