My oldest dog, Karma, has had a heart murmur for a while now. I was basically told to watch her closely, which was easy to do since I work from home. Poor little thing went completely deaf a few years ago but managed well with some signs I made up and by following the lead of the other dogs. We still talked to her as though she could hear us. In the last few months she became a bit incontinent in that when she barked she also peed just a little bit. She continued to eat well most of the time and her coat was glossy and her nails grew like crazy.
Her place to be during the day was under my desk when I was working or sewing. When I would walk away, she would pop out of her hiding spot and follow me even if I was just going to the bathroom or to get something to drink. Yesterday morning, she had breakfast as usual and went outside with 'the boys' to escape the vacuum cleaner. I was working with some fabric later after getting some things done around the house and noticed she was not in her spot but was near my chair instead. She didn't pop up to follow me when I left the room. I watched and her breathing was quite labored. Her back legs were shaky when I stood her up and she had her tail tucking in underneath herself. I got her outside and all she did was stand and tremble. Once back in the house, it took me a moment to find her. She was managed to get between the couch and the end table. I sat on the floor and she put her head in my hand as I stroked her with my other hand and watched her as she struggled to breathe. My husband was her person. He was at work so I called him to ask when he would be home. I told him Karm wasn't well. He came right home and after a few minutes told me to call the vet. I was thankful that the vet on call was the same one who used to live next door to us and the one who cared for her when we first got her. I left the decision of what to do up to husband. He agreed it was time. He held her as they gave her a sedative and she drifted off to sleep, then I held her as they prepped her for the final shot. I held her and talked to her as she drifted away. We still have two dogs, a cat, and two parrots...yet, the house seems so empty without that little twenty pound dog. She let me know it was time. RIP Karma

Photo dump...cuteness overload ahead.
First a couple pics of Karma when she was just a baby. The white spot on her chest eventually went away and the 'glow' on her chin got a bit darker. Here is the pup that I am picking up on the 16th for husband's birthday and Christmas gift. He says, out of one side of his mouth he doesn't want another puppy, then from the other side of his mouth tells me he spent his lunch break looking for a puppy. Note the white spot on her chest and that weird splayed rear leg sit is just like Karm always did.

Went to pick up the new pup today. She is going to be a handful! Her name is Harley. She is currently asleep on husband's chest. The ride home was pretty uneventful till about 15 minutes from home she was real squirmy. I put her in the crate and she proceeded to poop, a lot, and try to bury in the blanket like a cat in a litter box. So, a quick bath was needed upon arriving home. The boys are not sure what to think of her and the cat simply doesn't care. She romps around unafraid, with tail wagging like crazy.
I tried to give her some food that they gave us, and she ate a few bites then went to the big boys' bowls. After that, they really don't know what to think. It's going to be hectic around here for a while. To the vet on Monday to get her checked and get moving with shots and such.
Cute pup! Don't worry, she'll get you trained soon enough.
If you get to thinking you’re a person of some influence, try ordering somebody else’s dog around.
Very happy that the pup was quite settled last night. The boys are still unsure of her but she doesn't care. She seems to have come in the house and decided to be in charge.
The boys have stopped their battle for alpha dog for now, I think they know they have been beaten by a handful of fluff with a constantly wagging tail. They are currently curled up very close on one end of the couch with Quinn watching Harley with suspicion. RE: Pet Photos thread where too much is never enough.

From a year or two ago. M'boy Blackie got aggro with a couple of possums, and then puzzled when they paid him no never-mind, so he went in to investigate these things. I decided to get a pic of it, and that's when he realized "there's a camera about!" and promptly forgot about the critters. He's such a ham.
The puppy has two speeds....wide open and passed out. There is no middle ground.
