According to the Old Testament Yahweh doesn't reward people with eternal life in either heaven or in hell.  He just beats the hell out of you while you're living. 

According to the New Testament the Yeshua (Jesus) character will reward a person with eternal life in the golden cube called New Jerusalem or he will toss the person in the lake of fire.  But Yeshua said that his promise only extends to the Isralites.  No one else need apply.    So a clever writer muddied the waters and threw in a clause about how Gentiles can get eternal life.  He never did say how they could get through any of the pearly gates reserved for the Israelites.

A god is only needed if you want something from him.  If a person doesn't want anything a god might be able to provide then he doesn't need a god.
