I explained why I believe Awliya is best translated as authorities pertaining to the religion and holy books and teachings of the Prophets (revealed to them).

Mainly it means don't take them as authorities of what is found in the Torah and Gospels, as some of them are authorities over others, and a verse clarifies later, they have made religion into a game and fun.

Rgr that, the deeply "islamic" bits are fucking useless.  The human bits otoh, pretty nice.  I note that I fit in really well in islamic culture....so long as the islam is left out.  Deeply islamic people noticed that I was just like the son they wanted their kids to grow up to be.  I just didn;t believe in djinn.  The djinn believers, otoh..in spite of that...kept trying to kill me, lol.

It helps you connect with the universe. Filling that emotional "emptiness" that humans always suffer from.

Don't you ever claim that system; it's not yours. Secular philosophers built it, and lots of Europeans rejecting the bible and the Church's authority bled and saw what the bible and the Talmud are. Remember the illumination period -that accompanied the French revolution-?

I have the same problem with Islam that I have with any other religion - the idea that deities exist and the use of religion to brainwash and control others.

Sadly to find out the context of a verse you have to quote the verses behind it.
I mean come on: you read books before.Reading page 10 alone is so different from reading a page by page until page 10.

I think there's two types of religious people: honest extremist nutjobs and hypocritical cherrypicking moderates.

Both fundamentalists and moderates cherry pick. It's unavoidable given a text with contradictions as source material. Between the ones who cherry pick the worst parts and the ones who cherry pick the best parts, I prefer the latter, and they're no more hypocritical than the former.

What in the world makes you think people are picking on Islam? I'd say christianity gets the majority of the crap on this site.

OP: That it exists as a creation of man (the same as any other religion). That some of the believers are using it to manipulate other believers to commit racism, violence and atrocities against other believers and nonbelievers alike. And that the religion itself can be used to falsely justify these actions. 

Maybe this was stated earlier, read very few of the other responses.

The problem then is with the manipulators, those who listen to them too.

And that man created god/religion, not the other way around.
