As was pointed out in the book
Cosmos, it was religious orthodoxy and the associated oppression that killed the nascent Greek scientific revolution, mostly by killing off the best thinkers. Only for christianity was very much weakened by the wars of religion after the reformation, the Enlightenment went the same way.

Generally, when atheism has rallied around particular movements, it's either been at the fringe such as Mythicism, or debacles like Atheism plus.
I don't think atheism per se would be much missed if it simply disappeared. There have been some good thinkers, but their contribution to the ultimate course of history has been slight.
