My biggest issue with theists
#11
RE: My biggest issue with theists
Meh. I always say I won't disrespect their beliefs so long as they don't offend me. But really, why should I give them so much power? What really counts is to cut offensive people out of your life. Why keep them around? Equanimity is precious and easily lost if you let others push your buttons.

You shouldn't give them that. I don't. I like to offend theists, quite similar as I like to offend Marxist-Leninist, Maoists, and Neo-Nazis

I don't go out of my way to offend, but I don't hold back, either. I rarely interact with theists in real life, so most of my interaction comes on public forums where considerably more give and take is expected than in person.

My thought exactly. I just took a while to realize it.

The thing with me is, I interact with way more theists than I do with atheists, and I have no problem with that. Most of them are respectful of my atheism (not that it's really possible to disrespect the lack of something anyways  Jerkoff) and I, in turn, do not really say much about their beliefs. I don't have anything against disrespecting something as dumb as religion, but I try to refrain from it for the most part. They do test my patience for the most part though. I think the most fun I have is making fun of their beliefs. When someone tells me I'm going to hell, I have a fine time describing in great detail how much fun I'm gonna have hobnobbing with the devil and dancing on flames. Everyone always looks horrified, and I get a good kick out of it.  Cool

If someone tells you that you're going to hell, in a non-joking way, they deserve anything that gets said back to them in my opinion.

I don't think I've ever talked to a theist about their beliefs in person. I would actually enjoy it, I think, as long as they made a genuine effort to be honest. I'm mostly surrounded by atheists in England, or at least people who don't care about religion.

My biggest issue with religious people is that they have problem with everybody and they feel entitled to exhort you with their bronze age morality and rules for living.

teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

RE: My biggest issue with theists
OP: I have a best friend who is as religious as they come. We made an agreement. She doesn't preach to me and I don't tell her how ridiculous I think her belief of god is. Do we talk about religion? Sure. But we keep to the main talking points and do our best not to disrespect each other. We very rarely talk about religion but it does come up every now and then.

Set boundaries with your friends. Limits are good for any relationship and if you value your friends, the boundaries you set will go a long way in maintaining that friendship.

I have very many religious friends. Mainly Hindus and Christians, but a few Muslims and Jews thrown in there too. Two of these in particular, a Muslim and a Christian, are among my very best friends, and we frequently debate about religion, god, politics, and loads of other controversial topics. We're all very strong minded, and rarely, if ever, do such discussions result in any one of us actually changing any of our stances. But there's one thing in particular that aggravates me: their blatant dislike and disrespect of my country. They both vehemently hate it, and never fail to say so. However, their opinions, right, they're entitled to them. Right? However annoyed, disrespected, or hurt I may feel when they regularly and often tell me they'd rather die than belong to my country, I accept it.
And then one day.... I did something unimaginable. Unthinkable. I disrespected religion. Not Christianity, not Islam, just religion in general. The idea of a sky daddy. They know I'm atheists, but I told them I celebrate Christmas because it's fun and merry, and they got mad. Said that's a horrible thing to do. Said my country was the one that commercialized Christmas. Said it's about Jesus. So I told them Jesus could go kiss my ass if he wanted me to believe in him. And well, all hell broke loose...  Cool They said I could never do that again. Apparently, however much we disagree and argue, one topic was off limits to disrespect: religion. God. Sky daddy.

So, my point is, this, I've decided, is the one single thing I dislike the most about theists. That just because religion is above all for them, they expect it to be above everything for us. What if my country is like god to me? Shouldn't they respect it, if they want me to respect their religion. They kept on telling me "Countries aren't the same as god!!" Well, I get it Susan, only one of them ACTUALLY EXISTS.  Rolleyes Rolleyes Rolleyes
And this isn't just about country. It could be my family, my parents, my hometown. All these things could be god to me. So if theists don't want us to be blasphemous, they should learn when to zip it themselves.

Thoughts?

TL,DR: Theists think religion is above all and blasphemy is a crime, but disrespecting someone else's country, opinions, family (which could be like god to that person) etc is ok because that's not the same as religion. And I think that's hypocritical and dumb.

PS: This has probably been said countless times before on AF but I didn't wanna necro post.

PPS: I don't usually disrespect religion in public, this is more of a 'what if'.

Suppose that God exist.  Levitate

In this case would you be surprised to find out that God strongly disagree with all religions?  Think

Oh, by the way........do you know that not all theists believe in religions?  Dizzy

People tell me I'm going to hell all the time. Then they say they'll pray for me. I currently have 6 people praying for me everyday.  Angel
I live surrounded by theists. So much so that I can only count around 5 atheists as close friends in real life. I usually love conversing with theists about god and religion, learning their POVs and telling them about mine. And, as Joods said, we have an unspoken rule to be respectful for the purpose of both friendship and discussion.

I do have boundaries with them. But unfortunately, not disrespecting my country is not a boundary they are ready to set, because they simply don't understand how I can compare that to boundaries about respecting religion. That was the point of my post. But yeah, I do try my best to not offend them. It's just not worth it, in the big scheme of things.

If there really is an all powerful being out there, and he does not disagree with all religions as they have manifested today, then we are doomed.
And yes, I know that not all theists believe in religions. I have a friend like that. I was mainly talking about those that do, of course. Smile
