I was a Hindu, and Kali was my god, but I never felt watched or gave it much thought. I think that's more an intellectual idea than something believers actually experience.

If you don't hold his story to be true, you don't believe him, because of what the word 'believe' means. It's a mental state of holding something to be true. If you're not in a mental state of belief regarding something, you don't believe it. It's called 'understanding how words work'.

I think this boils down to what you find personally convincing, Huggy. Some people are convinced that aliens are visiting our planet after seeing a photo of a blurry dot. Not me. I need something more substantial to conclude that an extraordinary thing has happened.

No, it's taking the position of not believing them. Not everything is binary.
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist.  This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair.  Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second.  That means there's a situation vacant.'
