Maritime attorneys told the writer that the tactic is “a scheme that allows wealthy Americans to feign foreign status — and glean the lucrative benefits offered by offshore tax havens.”

Classifying themselves as “foreigners” gets them out of paying sales tax and use levies while living under the protection of American police and the U.S. Coast Guard.

I imagine that the WLB will be flying the Russian flag on the White House soon enough.

I agree, but the problem is that the people who would be subject to such prosecution have a long history of using their wealth to ensure that their actions are never, ever deemed illegal. Remember kiddos, it's not a crime if you call it "tax avoidance"... yay for unfettered Capitalism!

Stats convinced me long ago that that the fiscal and physical harm caused by "white collar" crime far exceeds the harm caused by "street" crime. And yet, the criminal justice system is disproportionately focused on street crime. It's why I tend to tune out any conservative politician who campaigns on a law and order platform. If they were really interested in justice, they'd go after obvious shams like the DeVos clan are engaged in.

They yell about how universal healthcare is going to turn us into Venezuela, as they shovel billions and billions of dollars into the military budget. The country is an oligarchy, and a lot of people are fine with it.
