I pull up the plants in the planters (unless they had any disease, then I landfill those). I have almost 20 containers, so this is no small task.
Clean then cover the garden beds w/ some fresh leaf compost. I put away all garden decor/planters. Drain the garden hoses and line, and store them.
Clean the gutters, mow the lawn one last time, put away deck furniture. Put away fire pit furniture. Clean all of the bird feeders and baths with vinegar/water. Put away hummingbird feeder...
I haven't done one thing yet, so I need to get my butt in gear.
We don't have any machinery to worry about, we use a reel mower, don't own a snowblower or weedwacker.

We're insulating the attic and the bulkhead, stacking two cords of firewood, running our lawn tools dry as well in the next few weeks, getting the chimney ready, making sure my car has winter windshield washer fluid, etc.
Basically, hating fucking life.

Hey, its Arizona. We consider the 40's to be frigid!
I'm a New Yorker, my girlfriend is from South Carolina. I've been giving her shit for her intolerance of the cold since I met her and I dont plan on stopping.

LOL I'm still wearing summer clothes in 40 degree weather.

But snow is so much fun! Remember the Monday morning I was set to go home and it had snowed? I was so glad I had my Jeep.

Take the car in for a checkup (regular checkup plus battery and heater check) and switch regular tires for snow tires.
Put the cover on the air conditioner unit outside.
Tidy up the yard, protect vulnerable plants with burlap, and get rid of as many leaves as possible before it snows.
Make sure I have a snow shovel and a container of traction sand in the garage and at the front door.
Switch the clothes in my closet to the winter ones, and put away the warm-weather stuff.
Put the electric blanket on my bed.
Consider adding even more lights to my front porch display before the stores run out of good ones, and before it's too cold to work out there.
Stock up on hand cream, because my skin gets really dry in the wintertime.

Snow tires are nice - but they sound like tractor tires on dry pavement - and they wear out quickly.
We have a set of snows on a spare set of rims - and I hold off mounting them on our third car - til the snow flies. My SO drives every day (I don't) so she can switch cars depending on the need - due to road conditions.
The snow tires are in their 4th season - and probably have only a few hundred miles on them.

Take out a jacket and hang it behind the door. My part of India never drops below like 45 F. And that's only at night. One thing I've noticed about Indians though is their intolerance of cold in the outdoors, but strange tolerance of the AC. The minute it hits 60 everyone here brings out the jackets and sweatpants (which is insane) but when we're in an AC room and I'm shivering away Indians are just merrily clothed in t shirts and shorts? Weirdos.
The word bed actually looks like a bed.

Changes in weather always tend to mess with my immune system, providing me with a lovely common cold.
I'm preparing myself by dragging out what my boyfriend affectionately calls my period pants, which are just sweat pants, and wearing them along with long sleeved shirts.
