I think it highly likely that Jesus was illiterate and never read any of the OT scriptures.

He moonlighted as a scholar, when he wasn't doing carpentry work.

I'm not really talking about what Jesus said. I'm talking about what the Bible claims Jesus said. TBH I find it doubtful that Jesus even existed, let alone that he was crucified or about 90% of the events of New Testament actually happened.

Although I think Jesus wasn't real, I think it's funny that there's a verse in John where the author seems to claim Jesus called the Old Testament God the Devil.

In Luke 4:21 Jesus reads from a scroll to the synagogue.

I'm not sure how you come to that conclusion, certainly if read in any kind of context it does not seem that way.
Even if you believe it's all made up it does not alter the context or the setting of the story.

When you quote it to make a point sure it does.
Does it matter overall, I doubt it.

Quite possibly. A lot of what we now know as canon was set in place by Maricon of Sinope, who believed that yhwh was an evil god who created the world and everything on it, and that the real god, Jesus' dad, had nothing to do with creation, yet was willing to redeem the inherently evil universe.

And as hard as they tried the proto orthodox & catholic church didn't come close to completely erasing Marcion's influence on the new testament.

That's a STORY written decades after Jesus' death. The REAL Jesus, being the son of a mere carpenter, was most likely illiterate. I would expect that if Jesus was an actual, educated preacher, he would have left behind writings of his own. I have no doubt that the biblical Jesus is a fictional character.

In that culture the biblical jesus would have been regarded with suspicion.  An unmarried, 30 year old man traveling around with a bunch of guys?  They'd have pegged him for being a fag.

try the easy to read version.

The KJV is a dead dialect and people who like to add alot to the bible or take away from it tend to use this version because they can hide many things in this confusing word choices.

The NIV while not a dead dialect tend to pattern itself in a modern scene from the poetry found in the KJV meaning it sometimes tries to recreate some of the beautiful points of the kjv by using modern language and sometimes can be confusing because again of word choices.

the easy to read puts everything in common english. this is not a literal translation by any means. but it gets the job done

especially in situations like this.

39 They said, “Our father is Abraham.”
Jesus said, “If you were really Abraham’s descendants, you would do what Abraham did. 40 I am someone who has told you the truth I heard from God. But you are trying to kill me. Abraham did nothing like that.41 So you are doing what your own father did.”
But they said, “We are not like children who never knew who their father was. God is our Father. He is the only Father we have.”
42 Jesus said to them, “If God were really your Father, you would love me. I came from God, and now I am here. I did not come by my own authority. God sent me. 43 You don’t understand the things I say, because you cannot accept my teaching. 44 Your father is the devil. You belong to him. You want to do what he wants. He was a murderer from the beginning. He was always against the truth. There is no truth in him. He is like the lies he tells. Yes, the devil is a liar. He is the father of lies.
45 “I am telling you the truth, and that’s why you don’t believe me. 46 Can any of you prove that I am guilty of sin? If I tell the truth, why don’t you believe me? 47 Whoever belongs to God accepts what he says. But you don’t accept what God says, because you don’t belong to God.”

Clearly the text is trying to say their father is the devil .....

but ... it's interesting, ... very interesting if you have your literary "radar" turned on.
This text obviously reflects a MUCH LATER (highly developed) theology and cultural viewpoint.
The words are "placed in the mouth of Jesus" but clearly he would never say these things to Jewish contemporaries.
It's a *later* view of Jesus talking in a later voice.
