Make Atheist Forums Great Again (Part 1)
December 11, 2018 at 10:49 am
A few weeks ago we asked the membership for suggestions to improve the forums. The staff have been going through each and every suggestion, discussing them to determine whether they can be implemented, and whether they should be.
We have made several decisions so far, but instead of implementing them immediately and all at once, we are going to make a series of announcements for the changes so we can answer any questions regarding them, and so members are prepared. In addition, the changes will be implemented on January 1st, 2019.
Today I want to announce two changes. The first is a new rule regarding thread subjects, which can be read below:
Quote:Thread Subjects
Thread subjects / titles should be relevant to the first post, be free of slurs, and refrain from using sexually explicit language.
This rule does not apply in R'lyeh.
This rule does apply in Area 69, though use of sexually explicit language is allowed.
The second change is the addition of two emoji/emoticons/smilies to the forums. These will be available immediately, so no need to wait until the new year. Please welcome taco and poop !
The code for entering these can be seen below:
Please feel free to ask about any of the changes. Once again, a reminder that this is the first post in a series, there will be more to come, and unless otherwise stated, the changes will not be implemented until 2019.

Thanks y'all for the thread title thing and the poop emoji lol. I'll be looking forward to the next announcements to see what else was come up with.
I do have a question about the thread title rule though. What exactly constitutes as slurs? Does it include insulting language? I'm asking because Neo actually made this suggestion regarding thread titles a while back ago and got horribly chewed out for it. Was his suggestion different from the rule change?

"Of course, everyone will claim they respect someone who tries to speak the truth, but in reality, this is a rare quality. Most respect those who speak truths they agree with, and their respect for the speaking only extends as far as their realm of personal agreement. It is less common, almost to the point of becoming a saintly virtue, that someone truly respects and loves the truth seeker, even when their conclusions differ wildly."

Neo was objecting to vulgarities, ie, vulgar language in general. Slurs tend to target groups of people. Thus:
Vulgarity: ‘I Have A Lot Of Shit To Deal With Today’
Slur: ‘All Christians Are Stupid’
Boru
Edit: Just to be clear, the slur above is an example, not something I agree with.

So, presumably, Min will probably have to find other ways to refer to the Republicunt party in his thread titles.
Also, what, no Easter Island head emoji?

Makes sense, thank you!

Also, does the "no slurs rule" still apply if it's only directed against the belief system itself and not the people taken in by it, something like (for instance) "Objectivism is fucking stupid" as opposed to "all Objectivists are stupid?"

I like the Oxford English Dictionary's definition: "A derogatory or insulting term applied to particular group of people."
So yeah, swearing itself is fine, provided there's some relevancy to the thread. We don't want to see any more stuff like "Christard", "Libtard", etc.

That's a good question and I think we'll have to discuss it more. If people are just going to change "Christards" to "Christardianity" then part of me feels like that violates the spirit of the rule even if it doesn't violate the exact wording of it.
