The War on Christmas

The War on Christmas
People are starting to talk about the war on Christmas, and one guy brought up a good point. Christians have been at war with other holidays, including ones that happen during the winter solstice, for so long that it's odd that they complain about some sort of war on Christmas. Forget that Halloween is treated as some sort of evil celebration of demons, and Thanksgiving is almost completely ignored when it comes to store merchandise. Christmas has more stuff pertaining to pagan celebration, family togetherness, and materialism, than it ever does about some dudes birthday. You have to go out and look for nativity scenes to even remember that Jesus has any involvement in a December tradition.

I guess that's what they mean by the war on Christmas, but this kind of stuff has been going on forever, and in the 1800s the puritans actually tried to ban the holiday for being too pagan. What you're trying to get back was never really yours to begin with. You just act selfish when you cry foul about using a term that includes all religions in a shared time of the year, instead of insisting on the term Merry Christmas.

I've got my humpback readied out with flying reindeer annihilating birdshot.  I have a brand new roof, if any overweight geriatric kiddie lover parks his sleigh on my shit he's gonna get braced...and I'm keeping my furnace well lit...can't let the yule fires go out, or you never know what might come down the chimney!

It seems that almost every year, an atheist is starting a thread about a "war on Christmas", never any actual Christians.

We took a vote.  We decided to let the actual Christians wage the war, and we'd chuckle about it on message boards.

I certainly go after old mythology and superstition so yea, I am saying that there is no such thing as a magic baby with super powers. But , as far as human rights from a government standpoint, one can celebrate or not celebrate any of the 365 days of the year they wish. The only thing that bothers me is the commercialism. You don't need to be advertising one day 5 billion years in advance. That is just done to get people to buy crap they don't need.

I also don't celebrate Jewish or Muslim holidays either. But getting pissed that a private business chooses to be inclusive by keeping holiday decorations or cups neutral because they accept there is more than one holiday in the winter, the fundies need to get a grip.

The war on Christmas schtick is largely a virtue signaling device deployed by those trying to out-Christian each other. I also think there is a bit of martyrdom at play.

That said, anyone taking offense at someone wishing them a Merry Christmas in a check-out line should promptly reinsert their pacifier. I can say the same for Christians that take offense when wished 'Happy Holidays'. I also don't have a problem with Nativity scenes in public spaces so long as there isn't a prohibition of non-Christian seasonal displays.

That is the problem. While Jewish holiday displays are far more tolerated nationwide, Muslims and Hindus and Buddhists and atheists have a far harder time putting their holiday displays along side Christian displays.

I think it is simply better to leave the decorations to snowflakes, snowmen and Santa.
