The brilliance of the alt right was in smuggling their thoughts into groups not traditionally seen as alt right, right, or racist...and this, in turn, allows them to then point at those groups espousing that rhetoric in a show of seeming support and agreement. The people doing it rarely seem to realize that it's been done, or how their remarks are used, or even that other people are giving them side-eye for entirely normal reasons.

Well...yeah?  Otherwise a rarity in my life, this particular issue hit pretty much every one of the buttons that interests me.  So I've been following it for awhile.

If you had been following it for awhile, you wouldn't be so comfortable or so certain of yourself. You wouldn't be trying to silence discussions with accusations of racism when given the slightest pretext to do so.

When a person steps in shit we pretty much assume it's an accident. Who would step in shit on purpose, right? When they put their other foot in the same pile we start to wonder what we're dealing with. When they stomp up and down in that pile of shit while loudly proclaiming that it isn't shit and that they certainly aren't stepping in it..it defies our ability to extend the benefit of the doubt, lol?

Here I am, though, extending that..and being told I'm wrong. Really walling me in on this one Yon, lol.

Let's get back to the OP.

Liam Neeson:
(a) is a nice guy and a member of one of the most left-leaning institutions in America, aka Hollywood, and brought up his racist moment to shed light on the psychology behind it. He's showing that people can change, and that they shouldn't let a moment of moral failure define them for a lifetime
(b) is about to have his blackface photo revealed, and wants to get one good swing in on black people, whom he's always hated, before he goes down in a ball of flame.

The people criticizing him:
(a) are too fucking dumb to understand things like context, or to care about things like intent
(b) are warriors for justice , and despite being almost exclusively white and probably not actually knowing any black people, have correctly identified Liam Neeson (from in front of their Macbooks while sitting in Starbucks sipping their $20 lattes and typing about the unfairness of life) as a middle-aged white man and therefore can state without any consideration that if he says the word "black," he's already part of the problem.

If you answered (b) for either of those, you need to have your internet taken away.

No, it didn't take on a life of its own.  Twenty million nitwit Frankensteins took it from the dead and very deliberately pumped life into it where there was none before. Many of them are even on Terry Crews-- perhaps the leftest black man in Hollywood and a loud voice against sexual assault in the industry. They say he's not black enough, because he tried to clarify what Neeson was talking about.

This really isn't a race issue, though. It really is the revolution of internet nitwits who have realized you don't have to be smart or informed to type in all-caps.
