Where's your favorite place to travel to?

I sometimes wonder if it is still there, since I haven't been to it in almost 30 years. It wasn't just a place. It was a particular hotel. It was the hotel Delores Alba in Merida on the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. Back then, I traveled a lot and the Delores Alba was where I went when I really just needed to relax and not be so crazy. It was the most perfect place in the world to relax with a cup of coffee and the morning's newspaper. I can't even describe what was so special about it. It was an inexpensive family owned place. It was a very nice, old, and well maintained building. The family that owned and operated the place was very pleasant. It was typical southern Mexico Architecture with the rooms surrounding a beautiful central courtyard. There was nothing about it that you can describe as being so special, and yet it was. The place had a lot of repeat business, and those of us who liked to stay there felt sort of like the place was our little secret. It was just a one minute walk from the central square of the city. Merida itself is a magical city where it is just so easy to relax and enjoy yourself. And if you feel like getting out of the city for a bit, the incredible Mayan ruins of Chitzen Itza are a fantastic daytrip from there. And if you want to take a couple of days in the more trendy places like Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and Cozomel, then that's not very far away either.

Wow, now this really sounds like my kind of get away! I love Mexican food and Mexican culture. Sounds like somewhere I could get away to for a few months and get some writing done.

South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Seychelles, and Egypt.

Not sure whether people consider Egypt as Middle East or Africa.

Geographically it is Africa but culturally seems very Middle-Eastern.

That's awesome though, did you like the food over there?

I never eat the food in other countries. People get on my case about that too. I have a bit of a sensitive stomach and don't want to take chances while traveling.

I pack my own food.

Okay, that's kind of different but I wouldn't get on your case about it. How do you pack enough food to travel for weeks on end? Dried goods? Rations?

Cereal and Granola bars. They can last. One thing i do buy in other countries is their chocolates particularly dark chocolate.

I can certainly understand the attitude in say parts of Asia.. Food is usually safe in the UK and US and of course in OZ and new Zealand..

When traveling I like to try local dishes, and I love trying all the different beers. Local house wines tended to be crap, even in France, where it was also very expensive. Only Austria had an excellent house  white in a small cafe; a beautiful, fruity moselle.

IF I thought the local food was dodgy, I often went to a McDonalds, you know exactly what the food will be like, and it's so bland and lacking in fibre it won't upset one's tummy.

Also also had a few medications on hand, for travel sickness, diarrhoea, headaches etc. Always carried the scripts for medication with me. (for immigration especially; US immigration can be rather officious) Plus fruit bars,  muesli bars, and boiled sweets such as barley sugar.

Best simple treatment I ever found for constipation was dried mango. I guess apricots or prunes would also work.

Ah well, not a bad as my dopey nephew; he refuses t go to any country where  English is not the major language.
