I see you live by a double standard how atheist of you, without absolute standards you can pick and choose as you have in this thread. The man has ruined lives, surely you do not believe a pedophile stops with one child do you, nor has it been demonstrated they can be cured, so what use are they to society. Doesn't need exemption clauses. The commandment actually reads 'thou shalt commit no murder"

Really, really handy, gives LOTS of wiggle room:

The Torah is the mythology and rule book of nomads, at a time when the words for 'stranger' and 'enemy' were synonyms .

Mosaic law was very harsh EG the death penalty for not not respecting the sabbath, for committing adultery ,and of course a father had the right to kill a disrespectful child.

The killing mentioned above was not considered murder.

Conveniently, neither was war ;That came in real handy when the Hebrews reached Caanan, and killed all of the inhabitants, so they could steal their land.

Every religion reflects the culture which invents it.

The post industrial consumer society in which we live makes it necessary for today's Christians to cherry pick scripture to fit in with their way of life; most definitely not the other way round. hypocrites. Absolutely; who isn't? The Christians I run across are simply a lot more skilled tham others

Killing vs. Murder

To begin with, what does it mean to “kill”? Taken most literally, this would forbid killing animals for food or even plants for food. That seems implausible, however, because the Hebrew scriptures contain extensive descriptions about how to properly go about killing for food and that would be strange if killing were forbidden. More significantly is the fact that there are many examples in the Old Testament of God commanding the Hebrews to kill their enemies — why would God do that if this were a violation of one of the Commandments?

Thus, many translate the original Hebrew word ratsach as “murder” instead of “kill.” This may be reasonable, but the fact that popular lists of the Ten Commandments continue to use “kill” is a problem because if everyone agrees that “murder” is more accurate, then the popular lists — including those often used for government displays — are simply wrong and misleading. In fact, many Jews regard the mistranslation of the text as “kill” to be immoral in and of itself, both because it falsifies the words of God and because there are times when one has an obligation to kill.

So no double standard, atheist are the ones who pick and choose their own standards to fit the occasion even if it has to change within that occasion to suit their need. So the hypocrite would in all actuality be you.

What was that? A mere guideline?

 Seems like what's  his name is unaware that Mosaic Law consists of 613 commandments, not just 10.

They are all found in the Torah, mainly Leviticus and Deuteronomy, I think. To deny they exist is disingenuous; evangelicals especially just love to cherry pick Leviticus  about homosexuality. IE " Lev 18.22 and Lev 20.13

Lev. 18:22
  • ‘You shall not lie with a male as one lies with a female; it is an abomination." (NASB)
  • "You shall not lie with a male as with a woman; it is an abomination." (ESV, NKJV)
 Lev. 20:13
  • "If there is a man who lies with a male as those who lie with a woman, both of them have committed a detestable act; they shall surely be put to death. Their bloodguiltiness is upon them." (NASB)
  • "If a man lies with a male as with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination; they shall surely be put to death; their blood is upon them." (ESV)
The 613 Commandments which make up mosaic law are  known collectively as the Mitzvot. (from 'mitzvah' meaning 'commandment')

I've always wanted to know from whence comes the 72 virgins suicide bombers are promised. I suspect it's a mistranslation of a passage from  the Hadith.

---Anyway, I'm unconvinced that being 'given' 72 virgins would be much of a reward. The demands would be enough to give a bloke a complex.

 I  also have a tiny problem with the notion of being 'given' another human being. Suggest a really fucked up mindset  about women.[as objects].   A lot like the absolute Wahabi  Muslim country of Saudi Arabia. EG recently, women were graciously given the right to drive a motor vehicle.

There are actually a lot worse human beings on the planet than our pet Christians.
