One disadvantage, everybody knows you.

Yeah, we couldn't get away with much in the town where I grew up.  There was no need for all the sophisticated surveillance cameras we have now.

 - Aren't you Doc's daughter?

- Oh shit...busted again.

And once ya get the reputation, and it gets around, little to nothing will change it.

We were looked at with suspicion anyway...not so much my siblings.  We moved there right before I started 6th grade.  I had been in (gasp) public schools prior to that and not in a Catholic school.  My sister started kindergarten there and my brother was a toddler so there was still hope for them.

To add to that my mother was a (double gasp) Methodist southerner (read: outsider).  No good can come from any of that in a town that was mostly Catholic and had been inhabited by the same family lines for years.

Since 2006 I have lived in a bedroom community in the Dallas area.  When we got here the town was fairly small with pretty clear divisions between nearby towns.  Now we have grown to the point where you can't tell where this town ends and the next town west begins.  It may be that way soon with the next town to the SW.  The demographics are really changing as other nearby towns seem to be getting the high dollar homes...it's still good as our house is at the edge of a subdivision that cannot grow any further and there is no through street due to the train tracks and greenway.

I am about 30 miles from an area of Dallas that is dangerous to wander into for any reason.  Areas where there are bars on the windows and a brick laying around would probably be tossed aside as a worthless weapon.

Were we moved here from was a town of 600...period 600 when we moved there in 1992.  It's now in the middle of meth hell and totally trashed when it was up and coming in the 90s.  Guess it depends on where you are and how things change. The growth in the county changed directions toward the lake and away from where we were.

I feel sure there are good and bad places of all sizes.
I grew up 6 miles from Whitehorse in the Yukon . It had it's issues alcohol was a big one and drugs later on and a lot of unemployment lead to the usual issues with poverty. Why I went to Ottawa and I must say I love my choice .

I was living in a county of under 35,000. A young man escaped from the local State prison. The newspaper was interviewing the Sheriff. They were using bloodhounds to track him. This is the quote from the Sheriff : "We've chased him before. He runs real good." The young man wanted to see his ailing Grandmother one more time. The county is Muhlenburg. Otherwise known as Methamburg. Was once a skit on Saturday Night Live.

Advantage of small towns: easier to wipe out the population.

Meh.

I've lived in everything from a town of 7000 people to a city of 500K. I'll take the city or suburbs, but not just anywhere.

The town I live in now is very like Alexandria, but I live in St. Louis Country. Major universities, world class zoo, other animal attractions at the Blues' stadium, all within 45-60 tops.
