It happens far too often...

Just saying that overall, being a cop is less risky than being, say, a construction worker or a garbage collector.

Or a witness...

Witnesses who listen when I tell them what they’ve witnessed do not seem to live particularly risky lives.

This is probably an unpopular opinion, but I find it rather selfish of the people who have young children at home. Shouldn’t being around for your kids be more important to you than scaling Everest? I understand why people do it, but how can that be worth the very real risk of devastating your immediate family? Do that shit when you’re single.

While I am absolutely am picking up what you're putting down, death can come at any moment.

Your point of view can be said of anyone who has a dangerous job.
Police officers. Firefighters. Even race car drivers and airline crews.

If you choose to play it safe for the welfare of your children, that is completely understandable and truly commendable.
Unfortunately though, life does not give a single flying fuck about such benevolence.

The difference being that climbing Everest isn't a job - it doesn't feed your family or pay your bills or fund your retirement.  It's really nothing more than selfish self-aggrandizement.

Somewhat off-topic, but being a cop isn't a particularly dangerous job.

Well, some people thinks life is worth affirming with the means of their own choice.

Why take the risk?

That view may be a bit narrow-minded in my opinion. I doubt every climber has the same reasons for making a climb. I also think challenging yourself and pushing yourself to the limit can give your life purpose. We don't say the guy jogging down the road is engaging in selfish self-aggrandizement, yet he's just challenging himself. It just so happens that elite climbers need more of a challenge.

Live and let live, guys.
