But a gun would sure be handy.

That's a fair point.  Suppose the axe-wielding maniac is a gun wielding manic and shoots you through the door or the window before you even know he's there.  He can then retrieve his axe from the boot of his car and dismember you at his leisure.

My plan is not to worry about such an unlikely event.  

I mean what's your plan if someone poisons your food?  What's your plan if someone blows up your house with a bomb?  What's your plan if someone smothers you with a pillow in your sleep after sneaking into your house while you're away, waiting for you to come home and go to bed to murder you in your sleep.
