Your damn electric car needs to make noise

We don't have that many bikes, but this Lime scooters thing (https://www.li.me/about-us) has now taken off here and they are everywhere downtown. Like your bikes these are being ridden like they own the road/sidewalk. It's only a matter of time till there is a significant injury.

We have those as well. First time they did a trial here, I witnessed a dumbass going the wrong way down a one way and plow head on into a car.

Unsurprisingly, people have taken to dumping the things in the river

When I was working for State Farm I watched a security cam video of a young man jogging around the corner, half down the block, and then out into the street from between two parked cars. A Corvette doing 30 MPH scooped him and flung him back to the sidewalk. The 'Vette was, according to witnesses, rather loud.

A neighbor ( now deceased) was a paramedic - and was amazed to find out how many pedestrians get hit by ambulances, police cars and fire trucks - who were running lights and sirens.

Proving again that in the Darwinian way - that stupidity has a survival value...

It sounds like more of a distracted driver/pedestrian problem than a noise, or lack thereof, problem. It does raise interesting questions though... i.e. what does "safe driving" look like in a world, maybe 100 years from now, where most, if not all, cars are virtually silent in operation? Hearing is a big part of safe driving, though not completely necessary (we do have deaf drivers on the road, after all, though I'm not sure what replacements, if any, are required for not being able to hear oncoming traffic).

In 100 years the pedestrian/auto interaction zone should be very, very small.

I'm conflicted. I'm a cyclist, but I am a wet long ride away from Boston.

I think that far too much is made of pedestrian right of way.  It's fine in theory. But in practice, far too many pedestrians have got it dangerously ingrained in them that drivers bear all the responsibility for road safety.  If you are going to look and not listen, you're more likely to get run down.  If you're going to listen but not look, ditto.

Watch for cars - most drivers are very, very stupid.
