Why does God get the credit?
#51
RE: Why does God get the credit?
Perhaps some version of a self-serving bias in combination with emotional inducement?

Or perhaps we Christians often get stuck on 2 Corinthians 3:5, "Not that we are competent in ourselves to claim anything for ourselves, but our competence comes from God". That doesn't mean He has to get all the credit. It is proper to give thanks for the effort put in by the people who actually contribute. Paul was often thankful to God and to others.
"There ought to be a term that would designate those who actually follow the teachings of Jesus, since the word 'Christian' has been largely divorced from those teachings, and so polluted by fundamentalists that it has come to connote their polar opposite: intolerance, vindictive hatred, and bigotry." -- Philip Stater, Huffington Post

It’s simpler than that. The phenomenon is called pious theater.

God can read your thankful thoughts. Other people need to hear them.

More force of habit in a society like ours than something people do for any specific reason. Scripture least if all, lol. In a different time and place you’d be thanking zues.

I think another relevant question is “why does god need a starship?”
Dying to live, living to die.

The Christian god needs praise...constantly...and money.

The Christian god, she's very needy indeed, but not all that dissimilar from any other god.

God shows his love for us by giving people the brains to be doctors, engineers and ect. I do not have the brain that would allow me to accomplish those things, my abilities lay else where. I am grateful that those people chose to become doctors and engineers and I'm grateful that God gave them the brain it took to do those things. So yes God deserves to receive thanks and so do the people who help us with our difficulties and other things of necessity. The thing I find interesting in the OP is everyone assumed the person was a Christian. Many times I've heard people who do not believe use the same phrase. If you are going to argue over something certain grounds need to be established or you might be wasting your time and energy on something as silly as a spoken phrase that could have meant nothing to the person who stated it, she didn't even mention God according to the OP so all was assumed.

GC *etc doesn't require and before it. Also are we thanking God for giving mad axe murderers their brains and ect.

Being a mad axe murderer doesn't require a special brain, just a sick one along with a sick heart. God gives neither of those, they come from the self through sin. Then why did you do the very same thing with ect. If grammar is all you can find wrong with my argument then why respond.

GC
God loves those who believe and those who do not and the same goes for me, you have no choice in this matter. That puts the matter of total free will to rest.

teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

Do I really have to explain sarcasm to you GC?

When you've got a spare five minutes, look up Doctor Harold Shipman, he was a well respected GP in England... Let me know your thoughts on his special brain.

Perfectly exemplified in a grace we said as kids:

'Matthew, Mark, Luke and John,
'Bless this food and the plate it's on.
'For the food that fills our tummy,
'Thank you, God and thank you, Mummy.'

RE: Why does God get the credit?
how is it not a miracle first of all, or do you think the word can only mean God magic?

here's a few more definitions to expound your very narrow world view.

a highly improbable or extraordinary event, development, or accomplishment that brings very welcome consequences.
"it was a miracle that more people hadn't been killed or injured"
an amazing product or achievement, or an outstanding example of something.
"a machine which was a miracle of design"
