I'd like to hear your thoughts on this.

Sounds like a crock to me. Success allows humans to continue with other attempts (a few will want to sit on their laurels). Think of all the milestones a child has to master to continue. We learn plenty from success, example: Einstein. 

I have know clue about the superstition shit. Makes more sense if you use hypothesis.

So I think the saying points out an important observation, but it's too much of an over-statement.  It comes close to rationalizing failures.

IOW, would you say the all inclusive language of the quote takes it beyond the realm of truth? Perhaps it's tangential to truth?

I see pluses and minuses everywhere.  The author of the quote was pointing out the possible downside to success, but I do think he should rephrase it for accuracy.
