[Serious] Who's your favorite Dem candidate?
#21
RE: Who's your favorite Dem candidate?
If Biden does not completely implode from gaffes, health, or senility; he will probably get the nomination because a little over half of likely Democrat primary voters are moderate and I don't think Klobuchar can take his place if he's still a strong contender. Sanders and Warren will likely cancel each other out unless one drops, and both are fight to the bitter end types; but if Sanders drops out before the primary due to health, Warren has a shot at the nomination.

If I were to vote in the primary today, I would pick Buttigieg or Harris; based on a deep desire to see one of them on a debate stage with Trump; and an opinion that either would do a good job as president.

Then I will vote for whoever gets the Democrat nomination in the general election; which will probably be Biden or possibly Warren. I think Biden has the better chance in the general because Warren is ahead of her time and won't be able to capture enough independents to take the presidency; but maybe I'm 'misunderestimating' the electorate.

The reason I bring up that she used to be.p a Republican is because if you look a bit more closely into her record, it really shines through. Admittedly, it may be more of an old-school Republican than the current “two notches below Literal Nazis” Republicans, but it’s still there if you look for it.

She might have been a Republican in the past, but she walks the walk.  When someone in her campaign was accused of sexual harassment, it was investigated quickly, and the person was removed.  The idea that she can't win is simply absurd.  Let's not forget that Hillary lost very narrowly -- and she won the popular vote.  And that was in spite of not visiting a few key states, along with her years-long baggage (which Warren does not have).  So you'll have to excuse me for finding the idea that she's "Just Hillary" patently absurd and rather sexist.

"Identity Politics" is just a way of saying "We don't need a female President!"  That much is obvious from the attacks on the "I'm with her" slogan, which wasn't even the official slogan (which was "Stronger Together".  And this time around, I think we've got a DAMN GOOD female candidate running.  And she's got a good shot at winning -- not only the primary, but the general election too.

I tend to be pragmatic - by the time our primary rolls around, there's only going to be a couple of names left. Of those who are likely to still be around, I like Warren.

However, I intend to register as Republican for the primary only so I can do my part to primary Trump, as unlikely as that scenario is. Fuck it, I don't belong to any party.

At this point, if the Democrats nominated a ham sandwich, I'd vote for it in the general election.

Point made, Ceci, perhaps my Hilary Redux comments were overly simplistic.

One thing I've always had a problem with is that some people have a purity test. It's fine for the primary, but once it comes to the general election it comes down to: Donald Trump vs ANY Democrat. And while I don't think just any democrat can win, and that we do need someone who can implement solutions that we need, I think multiple candidates fit that bill.

In the context of a general election:

Sanders is a clueless ideologue of disaster to start with.

Warren has largely painted herself into the similarly untenable political tactical position as Sander.

Harris seems to be as thin skinned as and not a whole lot less conceited than trump.

Gabbard came across as a self promoter who won't stop short of seriously hurting the party's chances to cling on a little longer

This country is not color blind and Asian electorate is too small and fragmented for Yang to have any chance.

If trump isn't impeached and convicted by Next November all these 5 candidates would all help trump's chances for degrading this country for 4 more years.

Unfortunately, Yang probably doesn't have a chance, especially if current polls are any indication of how the country actually feels.

I believe Yang is running on mandatory basic income, which is nice. Warren is better than most, but I'm afraid she'll fall short like Obama did. Biden and Harris can take a hike, as far as I'm concerned. I don't remember enough about the others to have any opinion.

UBI is the main reason I'd like to see Yang win.

Like it or not, there’s basically three main choices for the Democratic nominee that have any chance at the nomination, Biden has a depressingly long track record as a gaffe-spewing dinosaur whose politics still seem to be stuck in the Clinton years even as the party is moving far beyond it, and Elizabeth Warren, well, pushing a Cherokee Princess narrative on herself aside, the more I look at it, the more convinced I become that she’d just be a repeat of Hilary. She even had her own conservative phase, and an even longer one at that! Just compensate with a heaping dose of identity politics, and you get the strong impression that even if she wins the election by a wide margin, she’ll still lose. Just like Hilary. So you can see why I chose who I did.

Warren simply strikes me as Hillary 2.0.

Can't stand Tulsi Gabbard, and not a fan of Joe Biden.  Gabbard is an Assad-nut who defends Donald Trump at every given chance.  I don't trust her on the issues one bit.  Biden has no fucking clue what he's doing.  He's the John Kerry of the 2020 election.  Sure, he'd be better.  But he's not really going to inspire me or most other people.

What do you mean by an Assad-nut?

Sorry to say, that comment reminds me of this idiotic, bumbling NY Times writer who made similar comments, and then couldn't figure her way out of the conversation after she realized she had no clue what she was even saying.

I will hold my nose and vote for who ever is running against Trump. I would vote for a homeless drunk living in a box under an overpass over Trump. But my preference is a moderate like Biden. Joe is a good and honorable man and of all the candidates, is my favorite.

I would love to see a woman President but I don't think we have a good field this time around. I think Hillary would have been great but I don't see any of the the current female candidates as compelling.

After Hillary's loss I don't think we'll see a female President any time soon. Then again, I don't really care if we do, or don't. You could be a purple, transsexual, Muslim Martian for all I care - if you're fit for the job you're fit for the job.

(October 17, 2019 at 1:20 am)Cecelia Wrote: So simply because Elizabeth Warren is a woman you charge her with 'identity politics'.  Strange how that works.

Bernie Sanders is too old.  He might not even survive to the election, in which case we're left with whoever he chose for Vice President.  And if we're being honest, Bernie doesn't hire the best people.  Especially if we look at the sexual harassment claims and how they were treated in the last primaries.  I doubt that Bernie himself was aware, but the people he hired no doubt WERE aware.  And they failed miserably.    Not to mention the fact that they paid female employees at HIGHER positions less money, and I find it difficult to believe that Sanders is able to pick the right people, even if he has good ideas and a good record himself.  And a number of his supporters are quite worrisome.

Elizabeth Warren on the other hand has led by example when it comes to Equal Pay.  Her staffers are paid equally, regardless of their gender.

The fact that she USED to be a Republican is irrelevant.  Donald Trump used to be a Democrat.  He donated to Hillary Clinton and Bill Clinton -- and is good friends with Bill Clinton.  So I'm not sure why that argument really flies here.

It really is telling though, that Sanders supporters resort to this whole "Identity Politics" thing, which is a completely right-wing talking point.  Especially when it comes to FEMALE candidates.

It doesn't trouble you that she used to be a Republican?

Also, can we please stop pretending like people on the right never make good points? Why is something automatically dismissed just because it's "a right-wing talking point?" Can the charge of identity politics never be a reasonable one?

edit:

Not that it's really even worth mentioning... but I have the biggest crush on Tulsi Gabbard and AOC Tongue

I loved Gabbard's appearance on the JRE.

My reasoning here is that women are 50% of the population. I feel it is absolutely untenable that women of any race are so under-represented. The male-dominated paradigm MUST end. I am a man but this problem is crystal-clear obvious to me.

People of great skills like engineers, physicians and political leaders are of great value. How can we possibly justify throwing away half of them because of antiquated stereotypes?

We have all kinds of problems but IMHO, throwing away the the talents of women is chief amongst them.

Yes, I too am most concerned that the next President of the USA will embody the skills we need to move forward and IMHO, that's Joe Biden. However, I would REALLY like to see a woman POTUS because IMHO, it's important. As bad as racism is, I think sexism is worse. We need to come to full realization that the female members of our species are fully as capable as the male members.

I agree, but I don't think having a female POTUS just to have one is anything we should consider. If Warren is going to be fit for office, then great, let's vote her in. But I don't really care to artificially insert some female POTUS into the Oval Office just to make some statement about women being under-represented.

I think, if anything, having a female President is only going to show that women can fuck the job up just as well as men do. It's really an archaic concept in my opinion.

We're on the same page. All things being equal, I would prefer a female President but if the primary were held today, I would vote for Joe Biden. If the general election were held today, I would take time off from work to vote for almost anyone running opposed to Trump. A homeless drunk would get my vote over Trump.
