On NP news this morning:

Apparently some people are worried about the correct way to pronounce "'Omnicron".

I'm not fussed. I know by now to ignore the way some pill in the US says a word should be pronounced. I remain confident that some Oxford don will tell us the right way, as usual. The Americans will ignore him, as usual.

Pickle me grandmother! People are actually having that conversation? Gives a whole new meaning to the phrase "having the intellectual depth of a petri dish "

 I love the US have relatives and have been several times. Always had a great time and was always treated with great kindness and hospitality

There are certainly some things in the US I'm not wild about. I do not make criticism to offend, nor do I refrain to avoid giving offence. My comments are usually posted after at least a second draft, where they are often toned down. Any criticisms I make are sincere and I hope informed . I am always willing to learn from any factual errors I  make.

Conversely, I think it's only fair for me to look at informed criticisms of my county with an open mind. 

 A lot of Americans? Well yes, I've always seen this an American forum with a sprinkling of Canadians, Brits and perhaps three Aussies.

Perhaps it's best for me to avoid your posts. I don't tend to criticize other people's countries. We all live differently to a certain extent and I accept that. It's sort of difficult to attempt a friendly give and take with someone who feels the need to tone down their 'criticisms' but to still criticize.

Yes, it's apparent, but you don't pepper every post with it. That's my point.

If I want continual bashing of the US I will focus on Winter and Bel.

edit - There are a lot of things I don't like about the way things have been going here. But on the other hand, I am also a veteran, proud of that, and still have hope.

It's spelled "omicron", with no "n" right after the "m", btw. Long "o" long "e" for the "i", short "o" is the Greek pronunciation. USians and many others pronounce it differently, and those pronunciations have found their way into our dictionaries in much the same way as "nuclear" being pronounced "new-cu-lar" has found it's way, instead of being pronounced "new-clear".

Germany has just announced a mandatory nationwide lockdown of the unvaccinated, and (potentially) mandatory vaccinations beginning in February.

We can all learn from this.

To my knowledge a general lockdown for unvaccinated was never discussed. Unvaccinated however wont have access to small shops, restaurants, etc., aka lots of public life. They are however NOT forced to stay at home (tho there is not much reason to leave home now   )

Mandatory vaccinations: possible, but probable.....? Supreme court at least has (yesterday) confirmed that all actions by Merkels government in the past year, as well as the new law passed by parliament are and were constitutional.
Mandatory vaccinations will possibly be not necessary, since the current pressure applied makes many unvaccinated Germans get vaccinated. Yesterday 1mio doses were applied (Germany has 80mio people).
