An artist I love but that most people I know have never heard of.  Found an 8-Track of 'Ice Water' in the parking lot at a state park when I was in my late teens and have owned it on every format since.  I am partial to guitarists anyway but 12-string is a whole other level.

That's not a song you can sit down and play along with.  The odd tuning and crazy picking style are hard enough but throw in the classical themes and it's like trying to score Shubert by ear.  I imagine he influenced a lot of people like the Watkins kids and Elephant Revival group.
That is most likely what my redneck friend form Oklahoma would like.

You hit the nail on the head there.
Greenhouse is one of my favourite albums of all time.

Just listening to the metal rif in this video, it sounds like every Eagles song anyone knows.

The Eagles ripped off country and blues licks on par with Zeppelin.  They excelled at stealing members from Poco, first Randy Meisner then Timothy B. Schmitt, mainly because Poco was doing California pop country before the Frey and Henley.  Not that I don't like some Eagles.

I think Focus deserve more recognition for popularizing progressive rock.  This is some amazing work.

I loved Focus.
They remind me of Mahavishnu Orchestra who are also so underrated.

So here’s a fairly easy song from a similar guitarist:

Once you get the hang of the Open C tuning, this song practically learns itself.

I'm pretty sure Leo's E is tuned down to C.  The open harmonic licks do sound standard but could have used a Snark.  So I'll revise "odd" to C-F-Bflat-Eflat-G-C

He got the fame, but heavily disguised.

I will award two internets to anyone who remembers this band:

Glen Hughes.

And this beautiful song:

Miserable Bastard.

The name sounded familiar, but I couldn't recognize any songs and had nothing in the archive.

From the wiki, it appears their members were poached by other bands with record deals.

That is a beautiful song, despite my occasional aversion to electric piano.  I vote you win the thread.

This has both sax, and a Stevie Wonder hint to it. LOVE IT! Great post.

First tab I found said it was in Standard Tuning down two full steps. A lot of others treated it like it was in regular standard tuning and since I had greater sleep deprivation than usual, I was not in the proper headspace to properly judge the pitch. Also, I'm not sure when Snark tuners were introduced, but I'm certain it was well after that Leo Kottke piece was recorded. I think at that point, you just used a tuning fork for one string and hoped that you could use frets or harmonics to keep the rest in line. Or you were Neil Young and you went with those massive Strobe tuners:

Neil cared about tuning?  Well doggies.  Hello cowgirl.

Dr. Barranco had a cent strobe tuner in band hall that he only used it for demonstration.  Otherwise, he pointed.  You played.  He looked disgusted.  You adjusted the instrument and focused embouchure if you could.  It's much easier these days to have instant, exact, non-judging feedback.  I still gain inspiration from the memory of Dr. Barranco's leer over his specs when I know I'm off but not as much as as the full body conductor groove he fell into when he realized we didn't entirely suck.

Before tuners were affordable, I would tune to whatever record.  Zep I offered E on the first track.  "In the days of my youth..."  Van Halen tunes a half step down.  But tuning down to C requires heavy strings or a different setup at the bridge, nut, or tension rod.  Otherwise, you get fret noise.
