The open harmonic licks do sound standard but could have used a Snark. So I'll revise "odd" to C-F-Bflat-Eflat-G-C RE: Name me an artist who didn't get the fame

He got the fame, but heavily disguised.
I will award two internets to anyone who remembers this band: Glen Hughes. And this beautiful song:
Miserable Bastard.
The name sounded familiar, but I couldn't recognize any songs and had nothing in the archive.
From the wiki, it appears their members were poached by other bands with record deals. That is a beautiful song, despite my occasional aversion to electric piano. I vote you win the thread. RE: Name me an artist who didn't get the fame

Everything else, however, is still difficult. First tab I found said it was in Standard Tuning down two full steps. A lot of others treated it like it was in regular standard tuning and since I had greater sleep deprivation than usual, I was not in the proper headspace to properly judge the pitch. Also, I'm not sure when Snark tuners were introduced, but I'm certain it was well after that Leo Kottke piece was recorded. I think at that point, you just used a tuning fork for one string and hoped that you could use frets or harmonics to keep the rest in line. Or you were Neil Young and you went with those massive Strobe tuners:
Comparing the Universal Oneness of All Life to Yo Mama since 2010.

Neil cared about tuning? Well doggies. Hello cowgirl.
Dr. Barranco had a cent strobe tuner in band hall that he only used it for demonstration. Otherwise, he pointed. You played. He looked disgusted. You adjusted the instrument and focused embouchure if you could. It's much easier these days to have instant, exact, non-judging feedback. I still gain inspiration from the memory of Dr. Barranco's leer over his specs when I know I'm off but not as much as as the full body conductor groove he fell into when he realized we didn't entirely suck. Before tuners were affordable, I would tune to whatever record. Zep I offered E on the first track. "In the days of my youth..." Van Halen tunes a half step down. But tuning down to C requires heavy strings or a different setup at the bridge, nut, or tension rod. Otherwise, you get fret noise. |
