Turkey's Erdogan orders the conversion of Hagia Sophia back into a mosque

It is too bad if the general public is going to be denied entry into this wonderfully historic place. On the other hand, people regularly visit the Blue Mosque, which is just across from the Hagia Sophia. I hope that continues as well.

As for Erodgan, he is destroying the secular society founded by Attaturk (who had his own problems, admittedly). I grieve for the historical and cultural treasures of Turkey.

It was already converted into a mosque but this ruling means that it will no longer be a tourist attraction museum which highlights the history but will instead have muslim prayers and worshippers

We have many cathedrals in Germany, and of course they are used for mass. Yet, they are open for tourists, bar x-mas or easter, and during each routine church service access is limited..
Inside (in the catacombs for example) or next to the cathedral are museums attached with lots of findings placed there. I think this is a compromise worthwhile.

The simple fact that worship occurs there doesn't mean it won't be accessible to non-believers. I visited the Blue Mosque, even though I am an atheist. They didn't ask.

This conversion would presumably entail taking out all the exhibits and art so the building is totally gutted of interest, installing a washroom for WUDU and voila! A big boring vacant waste of space where people can mutter inane ramblings to an equally vacant god! Suberb! tut tut

"The Turkish government has stated that, although Muslim religious services will resume at the site, it will remain open to visitors of all nationalities and faiths—much like the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, which has been an active Catholic church as well as a major tourist attraction and UNESCO World Heritage Site. Erdogan’s spokespeople have also stated that Christian iconography inside the Hagia Sophia will continue to be preserved as it has been since the 1930s."

The building is in Turkey. It's a Turkish property that only the Turkish people get to say what to do with it.

In Spain, Christians converted lots of mosques into Churches, like:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mosque_of_..._de_la_Luz

and

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giralda#Co..._cathedral

and

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mosque_of_...er%C3%ADas

(the insult to the Islamic faith is that this mosque was converted into an inn first)

.
.
.
Just like the mosques of Muslims are demolished and turned to inns in the conquered lands of non-Muslims, Muslims have the right too to return the favor and turn the temples of non-Muslims into mosques if the public demanded in their homelands.

Aren't you Egyptian? Great Britain has mummies stolen from Egypt, go reclaim them instead of barking about the Turkish success.

No. I intended to bring only the sites that were originally built as mosques.

Just like the Spanish did to America. But we Muslims left the Spanish alive in their day.

No. The Byzantine empire initiated the assault on Muslims and initiated the invasion of Arabic lands, a war so long that ended in their defeat and the sack of their capital -Constantinople-.

No we Muslims don't do that. We invaded Egypt long ago but you still see the pyramids; right?
