Homophobia, like racism, is ultimately tribalistic. It's all about hating the unknown. It's ultimately based on a fear of the unknown. People fear and hate what they don't understand. Including the parts of themselves that they don't understand. Pretty much all bigotry are ultimately, sort of, a form of xenophobia.

That is ... when it's not just being motivated by an ideology.

Right now in Poland catholic church is spreading disgusting hate towards homosexuals where bishops and archbishops are calling homosexuals "a plague" and claim how they want to introduce "a dictatorship of minorities", and clergy is openly interfering with the presidential elections by fearmongering and telling lies.
