And here I was thinking that his sharing the story about the black trans woman’s murder trial was him showing that his morality wasn’t just warmed-over ressentiment. Evidently, I was wrong.

Indeed 

Seems to me that some people are so insecure about their own sexual preferences/identity that they feel very threatened by anyone who does not appear to meet their personal stereotypes of a heterosexual person of either gender.
