No; I believe you're pointing out a poor choice of words. A choice I often make intentionally. I've noticed that most people prefer brief simplicity over lengthy accuracy. For this reason I often use terms such as "always," "never," and in this case "everyone," rather than the clumsier but perhaps more accurate "most of the time'" or "the majority of people." I prefer not to hedge my writing; I hope this clarification prevents any future misunderstandings.

"'Accuracy becomes pedantry if it is indulged for its own sake. A classic writer will phrase a subordinate point precisely but without the promise that it is technically accurate. The convention between writer and reader is that the writer is not to be challenged on these points because they are mere scaffolding.' Any adversary who is unscrupulous enough to give the least charitable reading to an unhedged statement will find an opening to attack the writer in a thicket of hedged ones anyway" (Pinker, 2014, p. 44).

Hardly. Considering the MZ twins share the vast majority of central environmental influences too (eg parenting, country, neighbourhood, schooling, DVDs etc etc etc) and the concordance rate is still just 40%, it would be fairly reasonable to deduce that genetics has an extremely negligible, if not entirely non-existent role in bringing about gender dysphoria.

lol, I gather you don't have much of an academic background in social science.

Ah. Understood. No problem then.

Personally, I'd take NOTHING over accuracy---lengthy or otherwise.

There would be less gender dysphoria if we lived in a less transphobic society.

If we eliminated transphobia altogether, sure, there may be SOME dysphoria left over---but most of it would be replaced by gender euphoria. i.e. a strong desire to become the person one most feels one is ... without all the intense emotional pain that usually actually comes about via practically a whole world, usually including your own family and friends, telling you that you're wrong to feel that way.

Transgenderism is not a mental illness. Abuse often causes mental illness. And behaving transphobic towards trans people is a form of abuse. And a thunderously widespread abuse at that.

It's been a while since I've looked at this topic. However, the feeling of dysphoria shouldn't be affected by society. The dysphoria is a result of incongruence between your gender identity and biological sex. That feeling of mismatch is what causes the dysphoria. Facing a transphobic society might add to that a whole assortment of issues such as depression, but it shouldn't make the dysphoria better or worse.

Secondly, I don't know how you are defining mental illness. Sometimes the words illness and disorder, even condition, become unnecessarily stigmatized. Psychologically speaking, transgenderism is abnormal. This is first and foremost a statistical determination not a medical one. I believe clinical psychologists before labeling something a disorder, look for additional impairment or distress. Meaning that the person is suffering because of the condition, or their work and social lives are being affected.

Non-binary seems to be the new term for androgynous, which I never was.
