It’s pretty clear that it refers to people in office.

I guess I don't understand your comment then. Currently to convict an impeached president requires the vote of a 2/3 supermajority of the Senate. That's the only way to get them out; it doesn't happen any other way except the 25th Amendment, which wasn't really intended as a punishment.

On the question of how long the US can continue to exist, I just looked up some demographics data and I see that the white population is declining in terms of overall percentage of the population. If the trend continues, by 2045 whites will be below 50% of the population, so if the US can hold it together for another 20 or so years, who knows. I doubt I'll be around much past 2045 so it will be up to the next generation(s).
Why is it so?

Re-read the amendment. If you’ve taken an oath to defend the constitution and then take part in or support an insurrection, you can no longer hold any civil or military position in the US government. It doesn’t require a 2/3 vote.

Okay, so I've found two interesting things from the riots:
First, in addition to building a gallows on site and even destroying a cameraman's equipment so they could use the cables as a noose (which I've shown elsewhere on this thread), many also started a chant demanding that Mike Pence be hanged.
(and in addition, one of Trump's lawyers issued a similar demand for Pence on "free speech" Twitter alternatice Parler, something so extreme that even Parler demanded he take it down.)
Also, a strange note, among the riots was found someone waving, of all things, the flag of Palau.
And to this, I must ask:
What the fuck does Palau, a tiny Micronesian nation with a quarter the population of my hometown, have to do with any of this horseshit? I can understand your Nazi flags, your Stars and Bars, and your Rhodesian flags being there, but, frankly, the last time Palau had any relevance to US politics, it was when John Stewart was still hosting the Daily Show and he made a dad joke out of Palau pulling out of the Iraq war because their name sounded like "pull out."

Amd 14, section 3
No person shall be a Senator or Representative in Congress, or elector of President and Vice President, or hold any office, civil or military, under the United States, or under any State, who, having previously taken an oath, as a member of Congress, or as an officer of the United States, or as a member of any State legislature, or as an executive or judicial officer of any State, to support the Constitution of the United States, shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same, or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof. But Congress may by a vote of two-thirds of each House, remove such disability.
This is was intended to keep traitors out of office unless the Senate votes by 2/3 majority to allow it.

Nope, traitors would have been allowed in without Senate approval, provided they had never previously sworn to uphold the Constitution.

Ya know, I am glad to see they are arresting these people but I am a little pissed they aren't going after the instigators at the top...Hawley, Cruz, Trump, and others.

We are no where near the culmination of it. Buckle up Buttercup, shit's gonna get real ugly real quick. January 6th was just a preview.
If those motherfuckers know what’s good for ‘em, they’ll stand down on the 17th - that’s Betty White’s 99th birthday.

Speaking of Betty White...I watched a documentary about her the other day. She is a treasure.

Kinda what I meant earlier when I said they were arresting the wrong people. You can’t stop movements like this by going after the foot soldiers and middle management - it has to be a top-down strategy.
