Misinformation drops dramatically after Trump gets banned from Twitter

As much as I loathe right wing politicians and the angry extremists who act on their behalf, it alarms me that there's so little attention being paid to the right wing propaganda machine that empowers them.  The government is limited in what it can do, due to the first amendment, but I'm glad to see the private sector is successfully deplatforming them.  Truth is, the riot in Washington was what they want.  They've been screaming for violent revolution, they've been preaching how much they hate government and politicians and with Trumps election loss, they've been screaming about election fraud.  Blame the rioters, sure, but don't forget to blame the lairs who hyped them up.

One more reason to look forward to the Biden administration - a sharp reduction in nonsensical, paranoid, semi-literate tweets.

Oh, no, they'll still be there.  They just won't be encouraged or supported by the president.  Infowars and Breitbart rose to prominence with Obama in office and Faux News became a thing during the Clinton administration.

If Biden and the democrats REALLY want to get rid of crazy, ring wing propaganda, they would be using even just a slight majority to run gang busters, put in all those "socialist" policies Faux News always clutches their pearls over.  Give us Single payer healthcare, eviction protections from the covid crisis, raise the upper tax rate, bring back strong unions, raise the minimum wage and start using those anti-trust laws to break up all these increasingly consolidated companies that are putting a stranglehold on society.  When these policies are put in place and the people realize they're benefiting them, Faux News will be forced to change their tune or die.

I have to wonder whether it has decreased or simply moved to other platforms. The article doesn't indicate which social media this is based upon.

I didn’t mean to imply they’d be gone, just following on that there will likely be a lot less since social media platforms show signs of having grown a pair.

If what I've been reading elsewhere is correct, Faux News rating have dropped dramatically recently. They're now a distant third behind CNN abd MSN.

Already did their apology tour on the monetization of radical content - it's only a matter of time till right wing nuts blow up another federal building. Prosecutors will draw a straight line from here to there.

They tried moving to Parler before Parler got shut down.  Now I believe they're moving to gab.  Regardless, they've moving to fringe sites with little to no mainstream audience.  This is a good thing.  Let them keep being violent reactionaries online, keep posting the kind of posts that helps the FBI track them down while being on sites that lack the kind of mainstream audience required to get one of their people elected president.

I'm sure that the number of lies on Twitter has gone down in absolute numbers, since Trump and many of his followers got banned.

But notice that the story comes from the Washington Post, which publishes lots of its own misinformation.

It's owned by Bezos, who makes billions from his contracts with the government, especially spy agencies.

So I'm not sure that the average veracity of tweets has increased -- just that certain kinds of liars are gone, while other kinds of liars remain.

Plus I think we should be wary of "private sector is successfully deplatforming them." It means that private billionaires are deciding who gets to reach an audience.
