A Louisiana cemetery has apologised after refusing to bury a local black police officer because of a decades-old provision allowing only white people.
The Oaklin Springs Cemetery board met on Thursday to change its sales contract after an outcry over the "white human beings" rule.
Officer Darrell Semien's widow called it a "slap in the face" to be denied a plot "because he's black".

How the hell can this still be a thing in 2021??    Mad

No shit. The GOP is proof that time travel is real.

How do you know this has anything to do with the GOP?

He doesn't and it has nothing to do with the GOP.  It's just the blathering of a fool.

We have all kinds of "this race only" establishments scattered around my city/state. They never put it in writing, but the wrong people know they're not welcome.

We also have "this gender only" and "this income only".

All hail the tribes!

I remember asking where a wake would be held for the twin sons of a coworker who died in a car accident on graduation night. My husband responded with the name of a funeral home adding that it was the black funeral home. SC didn't ever bother with any sort of desegregation.

Ignorant dipshit.

Go check those whitey boneyards - and you find the vast majority of the stiffs were Democrats......

It was Dixiecrats that passed all the Jim Crow laws....

...

I just can't imagine why the family wants to bury their dead in such dicey company.....

And I take it we still haven’t read up on how Kennedy and Johnson became pro-Civil Rights, how the Republicans developed the Southern Strategy in response, and how, because of these two factors, the party of Lincoln became the party of White Supremacy and the party that opposed the abolition of slavery and the enfranchisement of freedmen in the mid-19th century became the party that at least tried to help the lot in life of their descendants?

Also, on the OP, I hoped that this was just some old, obscure regulation that was never enforced since the Civil Rights Acts but they still never got around to actually removing it from their rule book. But it turns out they were still enforcing it and putting the language “white human beings” on their burial contracts in 2021. Dafuq?

Ummmm.....  It does? Don't get me wrong. Continue to give Brian shit for this and that...but this isn't an open question.

The GOP courted southern black votes when the cemetery bylaws were written.  They later bought the lean, but that's not working the original deal.  Democrats did that, but the voters were pretty much the same.

Louisiana is one of those "different country" states.  More so than Texas or which ever state you associate with "they're not like us."  Current events and political winds notwithstanding, don't wake them too hard.

It's like I tell people who may see me take a fall, then twitch a bit . . . give me room as I wake up.  Lest England Dan and John Ford Coley decide to move in and change your life.
