Yeah but with more shock value I suppose. I was thinking something a la the Jerky Boys. I think they've done similar stuff ... calling certain places and asking for ridiculous stuff they know wouldn't be there.

I stand corrected. I would have retrieved those books for my own collection as well. If I learn that his friend did something along those lines I will happily retract my earlier remarks.
My friend just kind of went into shock and wasn't about to do anything because the guy he was with is quite mentally unstable.
