Students Are Told to Chant to Aztec Gods of Human Sacrifice as Part of Calif. Ethnic Studies Curriculum
Quote:A new statewide ethnic studies curriculum under consideration by the California Department of Education encourages teachers to lead their students in chants to Aztec gods in what one critic of the curriculum says is a clear refutation of the “Christian god.”
Christopher Rufo, the director of the Discovery Institute’s Center on Wealth & Poverty, criticized the proposed curriculum in a column last week, saying it “advocates for the ‘decolonization’ of American society” and even “elevates Aztec religious symbolism.”
“Under the guise of ‘equity’ and ‘empowerment,’ activists within the public education system have developed this radical new curriculum in order to transform California schools into factories for left-wing political activism,” Rufo wrote. “They have recast the United States as an oppressor nation that must be deconstructed and subverted through politics.”
“Public schools are prohibited from leading state-sanctioned Christian prayers; they would presumably be similarly prohibited from leading state-sanctioned chants to the Aztec god of human sacrifice,” he wrote.

When did consuming ethnic foods not become a good enough exercise in experiencing other cultures?

Instead of chanting prayers to the Aztec God, they should put stony holy Aztec ornaments right beside displays of the ten commandments on public properties.
teachings of the Bible are so muddled and self-contradictory that it was possible for Christians to happily burn heretics alive for five long centuries. It was even possible for the most venerated patriarchs of the Church, like St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas, to conclude that heretics should be tortured (Augustine) or killed outright (Aquinas). Martin Luther and John Calvin advocated the wholesale murder of heretics, apostates, Jews, and witches. - Sam Harris, "Letter To A Christian Nation"

I agree it's hypocritical for someone working with the Discovery Institute, which was founded to try & sneak creationism through the backdoor of the education system, but has he not a point? It is generally agreed that it is a violation of the separation of Church & state for a teacher to endorse on religion or proselytise to their students, though I'm not an American & I don't know the actual relevant federal & state laws.
Or is everyone completely fine with tearing down the church-state separation when defending it might be politically incorrect?

I'd like to imagine that he can't really think that the us government is endorsing aztec religion or proselytizing aztec religion to it's students - but some people are that thick.
It's for his distaste for leftwing activism, and not any credible belief about the above, that his panties are in a twist.

They are chanting prayer to Aztec gods, no? Maybe the article is sensational & that isn't really what it is. But if they were teaching about the Italian unification the war against the Papal States & had the students chanting Ave Maria I think that would be a problem, no? If they are having them chant to Aztec gods, how is it any different?

Perhaps they should also sacrifice people to the Sun God by having their hearts ripped out.
I'm old fashioned that way.
Perhaps Catholics?

His point is, at best, ludicrous.
