How would I go about proving that I don't hold certain beliefs ?
My actions and behaviors are a vital clue. I accept reality and require evidence for any beliefs that I do hold. If there isn't any evidence for a certain belief, I will not hold it. I suppose the proof that I don't believe that I'm actually 10 feet tall, would be me saying that I accept independent measurements of my height as the truth of reality. I could take a polygraph test. If all of my answers under a polygraph were consistent with reality, then you could either accept that I am telling the truth or that secretly in my own mind, I don't accept reality as it's presented to me through my senses.

I find it ironic that what was supposed to be a "gotcha" question actually turns out to say more about Walter99's beliefs. Namely that they need someone else to tell them what they believe in order to confirm it. At least, that's the implication I got from this; if I can't prove that I believe what I believe, then the answer must be I need authority to define me for me. Which says all kinds of things about what we're really defining as faith and the importance of obedience versus free will.  RE: How do you prove to everybody including yourself you're an atheist?

Also... why would I need to prove my beliefs (or lack of them) to anyone?

I dont care if people believe I'm an atheist or not UNLESS they try to tell me what I do believe.
Several Theists have tried to do that. They have defined my atheism into something they could argue against and have always got it wrong. You hate god is one. You want to worship satan. You just want to sin. No one really doesnt believe in a god they always believe in something. All of those are wrong. You can fix ignorance, you can't fix stupid. Tinkety Tonk and down with the Nazis. |
