Russia is offering stark criticism of the U.S. military attack on Venezuela, which resulted in the capture of President Nicolas Maduro.

In response, Russia called for a full meeting of the United Nations Security Council.

"This morning, the United States carried out an act of armed aggression against Venezuela. This causes deep concern and condemnation," Russia said in a statement from its Foreign Ministry.

"The pretexts cited to justify such actions are unfounded. Ideologized hostility has prevailed over practical pragmatism and over a willingness to build relations based on trust and predictability," Russian officials wrote, nearly five years into the nation's own war in Ukraine.

Russia, a key ally of the Maduro regime, said it was crucial to "prevent further escalation and to focus on finding a way out through dialogue."

"We proceed from the understanding that all parties who may have claims against one another should seek solutions through dialogue-based approaches. We are ready to support them in this," the ministry said.

You are aware that Trump’s been about as Pro-Putin as he could get away with, right?

He's been sort of hot and cold toward Russia. 

But Trump is not the only person in the US government. Plenty of politicians are vehemently opposed to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. For example Senator Lindsey Graham favors escalation of hostilities. Victoria Numan, who played a role in the 2014 putsch in Kiev, recently crawled out from under her rock to say that Ukraine should fight another two years. 

We can wait and see what they say, but I have a feeling that such people are going to bend over backwards to say that when we do it it's OK.

We've also got some alignments that we might not expect. So for instance Macron, liberal defender of freedom on Europe, has praised the Venezuela expedition. While Marine le Pen, far right anti-immigrant danger to humanity, condemns it as illegal.

I also condemn it as illegal, but I'm not particularly happy to have le Pen as my ally.

Despite previous reports that Russia had supplied Venezuela with additional air defense systems in 2024, including Buk-M2 and Pantsir units transported by Il-76 aircraft, these systems appear to have been ineffective or neutralized. Defense Express notes that no visible air defense response has been detected in videos recorded during the attacks.

Venezuela’s ground-based air defense network includes 1–2 divisions of S-300VM systems, 3–9 Buk-M2E systems, and over 6 S-125 Pechora-2M units — all of which are Russian-designed. Venezuela’s air force also relies heavily on 21 Su-30MKV fighters, a local variant of the Russian Su-30MK2.

Russia, a key military partner to Venezuela, had attempted to bolster the country’s air defenses in late 2024, but the current operation raises questions about the operational effectiveness of those systems in a modern battlefield environment.
