An international team obtained immunoglobulin G (IgG) from eight patients with fibromyalgia and from eight healthy controls. Each IgG sample was administered intraperitoneally to a mouse for 1 week. The mice that received IgG from fibromyalgia patients demonstrated greater sensitivity to both mechanical pressure and cold, reduced locomotor activity, reduced front paw grip strength, reduced intraepidermal nerve fibers, and sensitization of nociceptive small fibers. These characteristics were
not seen when mice received IgG-depleted serum from patients with fibromyalgia or IgG from healthy controls. Histological studies revealed that the IgG from fibromyalgia patients had activated glial cells surrounding the dorsal root ganglia in the. Pooled sera from two additional groups of patients with fibromyalgia recapitulated the same abnormalities in mice. These changes attenuated when administration of IgG to the mice stopped.
