This is similar to my own experience with religion. However, instead of trying out other religions, after leaving Catholicism, I just went straight to going barefoot.

Yea, of course. I know how they feel. I wanted to do it with Farrah Fawcett, Jacklyn Smith, Donna Wilkes, Tonya Roberts. To name a few.

I'd be genuinely interested in hearing what a religion with a god can provide that a religion with no gods couldn't.

The so-called god shaped hole may just be a religion shaped hole..and we call it the other thing on account of being much more familiar with religions of gods. To the point where - and these boards are a great example, the terms are conceptually interchangeable. When we hear about "religious people" we assume and the speaker is, generally, talking about christians. When they say the problem with religions is that .......- and what follows is a litany of god bothering absurdities.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

Maybe that's what you assume? I never make that assumption.

Right, but is that it? To say that there are things that a religion of god can provide that a religion without a god can't..is just to say that the one has a god....?

I just wanna say, I think Neo's answer was hilarious and awesome.

But, doesn't that kinda suggest what theists don't like to say: that their god is something manufactured by their religion?

Gods supply trancendant values. They aren't the only thing that does, but only certain things do.

Buddhism and certain Hindu beliefs do as well by postulating a transcendant law of karma, or by positing that reality has transcendant properties of some sort.

People who don't believe in gods, and aren't buddhists or hindu...can and do also believe in transcendent values, right?
